Cargo ebike offers up to 170-mile range at an affordable price

Phoenix-based electric bike manufacturer Lectric has unveiled the second generation of its popular cargo ebike, the XPedition 2.0. Building on the success of last year’s model, which became the best-selling cargo ebike in the United States, Lectric aims to provide enhanced performance and premium features typically found in higher-priced models, all while maintaining an affordable price point.

Levi Conlow, CEO of Lectric, commented on the new release: “The XPedition has been the best-selling and most successful cargo ebike in the industry since its debut, and that’s due to its unmatched combination of performance and value.” He added, “With the XPedition 2.0, we’re doubling down on that commitment. Even in a year when many ebike prices have gone up, we’re delivering significant upgrades without increasing the price – something we believe will only amplify the continued success of this ebike.”

The XPedition 2.0 features a freshly redesigned aluminum frame with updated tubing and an extended wheelbase, enhancing its cargo-hauling capabilities. Despite these design changes, the new model maintains the same maximum load capacity of 450 pounds (204 kilograms). The frame’s durability and extended wheelbase provide users with more space for transporting goods without compromising stability or safety.

Under the hood, the XPedition 2.0 is equipped with the same powerful 750-W M24 hub motor as its predecessor. This motor can peak at over 1,300 watts and delivers 85 Nm (62.7 lb.ft) of torque, enabling pedal-assist speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h). The cargo ebike is versatile in its classification, allowing it to operate as a Class 1, 2, or 3 ebike, depending on the rider’s preference and local regulations.

The expanded and enhanced XPedition 2.0 is available at the same price as last year’s original model.

One of the standout features of the XPedition 2.0 is the inclusion of an in-house torque sensor, which Lectric claims provides “best-in-class performance at higher power levels.” This sensor works in tandem with Lectric’s proprietary PWR+ programming, offering five predetermined power levels through pedal-assist (PAS) modes. This combination is designed to deliver a responsive and natural feel to the motor assist, enhancing the overall riding experience. Additionally, the drivetrain has been upgraded to a Shimano Altus 8-speed system, providing smoother and more reliable gear shifts.

Battery options for the XPedition 2.0 cater to a variety of user needs. The standard configuration includes a single 624-Wh battery mounted behind the seat post, offering up to 60 miles (96.5 km) of range on a single charge. For those requiring extended distances, the Long-Range variant features two 48-V/13-Ah batteries, extending the range to approximately 120 miles (193 km). The Extra Long Range version is equipped with two 48-V/17.5-Ah batteries, allowing riders to travel up to 170 miles (273.5 km) between charges.

The XPedition 2.0 is available with three distinct battery configurations, including an option that delivers up to 170 miles on a single charge.

Comfort and handling have also been addressed in the new model. The XPedition 2.0 includes an adjustable dual-spring suspension fork with 50 mm of travel, which helps absorb shocks from uneven terrain. The 20-inch wheels are fitted with puncture-resistant tires that are half an inch narrower at 2.5 inches, a change that Lectric states improves maneuverability and handling without sacrificing durability.

Safety features on the XPedition 2.0 are comprehensive. The ebike is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes featuring 180-mm rotors, ensuring reliable stopping power in various conditions. Other safety and convenience features include a color LCD display, integrated lighting with turn signaling, full fenders, rear wheel protection, and an extra-wide dual-leg kickstand that provides stable parking.

In terms of safety certifications, the XPedition 2.0’s batteries and electrical systems meet UL 2271 and UL 2849 standards, ensuring safety and reliability. Furthermore, the cargo ebike complies with the DIN 79010:2020 standard for cargo ebikes, indicating that it has undergone rigorous safety testing. This includes evaluations of brakes and parking brakes, higher load-bearing tests for the frame and fork, and additional child passenger safety tests.

The XPedition 2.0 is currently available for pre-order with a starting price of US$1,399, maintaining the same price point as the original XPedition model. This pricing strategy underscores Lectric’s commitment to providing high-quality, feature-rich cargo ebikes at an accessible cost, aiming to make cargo hauling more affordable and efficient for a wider range of consumers.

The XPedition 2.0 retains the original’s 1,300-W peak hub motor but now includes an upgraded in-house torque sensor.

Overall, the XPedition 2.0 builds on the strengths of its predecessor by incorporating significant upgrades in design, performance, and safety while keeping the price steady. This approach positions Lectric’s latest cargo ebike as a competitive option in the growing market for electric cargo transportation solutions.
