In response to the growing demand for efficient city transportation, Desner has unveiled its latest micro-car, the A05, at EICMA 2024 in Milan. Designed to navigate busy urban streets with ease, the A05 is now available for pre-order, positioning itself as a practical alternative to larger SUVs.
Micro-cars like the Desner A05 cater to individuals whose daily commute involves solo travel or carrying a passenger. This segment includes a variety of models from both startups and established automakers, such as the Microlino, Ami, and the former Twizy, now known as the Mobilize Duo. These compact vehicles offer a more comfortable and weather-protected option compared to electric bikes or motorcycles, while also providing the ability to transport light cargo.
Classified as a quadricycle under the European L6e vehicle category, the A05 is not technically a car but functions similarly to a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) in the United States. This classification restricts the vehicle’s top speed to 45 km/h (28 mph), making it suitable for city commuting and short trips like shopping. According to Desner, the A05 is equipped with a 3-kW motor that “allows it to tackle any slope without loss of torque or acceleration,” ensuring reliable performance on various urban terrains. Additionally, the quadricycle classification permits drivers as young as 14 years old, provided they hold an AM permit in certain regions.
The Desner A05 is powered by a 7.2-kWh battery, offering a range of up to 120 km (74.5 miles) on a single charge. The vehicle features a three-door design with seating for two passengers side by side, complemented by a trunk for additional storage. Inside, the A05 boasts a digital cockpit and a central tablet-sized display running native Android, which provides built-in connectivity for an enhanced driving experience. High-performance speakers deliver driving music, while interior heating and air conditioning ensure comfort in varying weather conditions.
Constructed with a reinforced steel structure, the A05 prioritizes safety and durability. It rides on alloy wheels fitted with 145/60 R13 tires and is equipped with disc brakes on both the front and rear wheels. The vehicle’s compact dimensions—2,608 x 1,398 x 1,636 mm (102.6 x 55 x 64.4 inches)—make it easy to park, with Desner noting that it can “fit within the stripes of motorcycle stalls,” an advantage in crowded urban areas.
Prospective buyers can secure a pre-order for the Desner A05 by placing a €99 (approximately US$104) deposit. Early adopters may benefit from a European Ecobonus incentive, which can reduce the final purchase price by over $2,000 from the listed €9,900. This pre-order window is available until the end of the current month. After this period, while customers can still join the pre-order queue, they may not qualify for the incentive discount. Desner anticipates that the A05 will be available to the public starting in the second quarter of 2025.
