Cargo ebikes have steadily gained popularity for their practicality in urban transport. Germany-based startup Car.Los Mobility is shaking things up with the V1, a folding Long John cargo ebike that combines the spaciousness of a front-loader with the compactness of a foldable design. Introduced as a prototype at Eurobike 2023, the V1 has since earned industry recognition, including an iF Design award nomination and praise at the Taipei Cycle Show. It’s even been shortlisted for Best Cargo Bike at Cycling World 2024.
Compact design for versatility
The V1’s standout feature is its patent-pending mid-frame folding mechanism, allowing the bike to fold down to half its size in seconds. Along with a folding handlebar and collapsible cargo basket, the bike folds into a compact 108 x 44 x 83 cm (42.5 x 17.3 x 32.6 in) form. This makes it easy to transport via car, train, or public transit, and convenient for storage in small spaces—a boon for urban dwellers without garage access.
Powered for efficiency
Equipped with a 250-W Brose Drive-T mid-mount motor, the V1 delivers pedal assistance up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) and provides 70 Nm (51.6 lb.ft) of torque. Its stepless Enviolo N380 Cargo shifting hub ensures smooth gear changes without interrupting pedaling, making for a seamless riding experience. A 522-Wh battery is tucked under the cargo basket, maintaining a low center of gravity for stable handling. While specific range figures remain unannounced, the setup is designed for efficiency and safety during daily commutes or hauling.
Robust cargo capabilities
The V1 can carry a maximum load of 195 kg (430 lb), with its foldable Vario Basket accommodating up to 65 kg. Built for heavy-duty use, the bike rides on durable Schwalbe Pick-Up tires—20 inches at the rear and 16 inches at the front. Its Magura MT05 hydraulic disc brakes with 180-mm rotors ensure reliable stopping power, while an 80-lux LED headlight and braking tail-light enhance visibility.

Pricing and options
The Car.Los V1 is available at a starting price of €5,199 (~US$5,400). For those who prefer to mount their own front basket, a Basic version is offered for €4,799 (~US$5,000). Optional accessories, such as a rear rack, provide additional versatility for specific needs.
