The SEVAS catches the water your shower wastes while it heats up

Most people know the small daily waste of standing outside the shower, waiting for the water to run warm while perfectly clean water disappears down the drain. The SEVAS Water Catcher, made by an Australian company of the same name, is a purpose-built tray designed to capture that runoff and then double as a watering can, offering an alternative to the usual fix of leaving a bucket on the bathroom floor.

How it works

The SEVAS is placed over the shower drain before the water is switched on. A silver plug at the center stays open to let the tray fill as the shower heats up. Once the water reaches the desired temperature, pressing the plug seals the container, and the unit is moved to the side of the shower so it doesn’t become a trip hazard.

Each unit holds up to 5 liters (about 1.3 gallons) of water when lying flat. The company is upfront that capture varies: older showers tend to release more water before warming, while modern bathrooms with flow restrictors capture less. As SEVAS notes, “If your SEVAS is not full after one shower that is okay, it will be after the next.”

When it’s time to reuse the water, side handles make it easier to carry and pour, and an included watering can attachment lets it water plants directly. SEVAS suggests other uses too, including cleaning, soaking laundry, washing pets, or pouring it back into the toilet.

The water-saving math

Used once a day, SEVAS says the catcher can save up to 1,800 liters (roughly 475 gallons) of water per year. The company also states that “an average household can save over 7,000L a year.” As with the per-shower capture, these are best-case figures that depend heavily on household size and plumbing.

The product carries a Smart Drop Certification from The Water Conservancy, and the company describes the design as award-winning and globally patent protected.

Materials and build

The water tank is made from HDPE plastic, which is fully recyclable, and is produced using an injection blow molding process with a closed-loop cooling system that SEVAS says wastes no water in manufacturing. The plug is stainless steel, and the lid and watering spout are assembled and quality tested. The company states the product uses 100 percent recyclable materials and packaging.

On weight, the catcher is 1.2 kg (2.65 lb) empty and up to about 6.2 kg (13.6 lb) when full, which the company says it tested to be manageable for both children and older adults.

The slim design replaces bulky buckets while capturing up to 5 liters (1.3 gallons) of water.

Practical limits

SEVAS includes some sensible guidance. Captured water should be reused within five days to avoid contamination or rust inside the tank, and the catcher should be cleaned with water and eco-friendly soap. The company advises against reusing the water on plants if the home has a water softener installed, and warns that the unit should never be stood on and should be moved aside before stepping into the shower.

It’s also worth a realistic note: the water saved here is the clean, cold runoff before a shower warms, not greywater, so its reuses are limited to that volume. For households already comfortable with a bucket, the appeal is mostly about convenience, safety, and not having a bucket cluttering the bathroom.

Giving back

SEVAS says every unit sold contributes to environmental projects through a partnership with Greenspark: two days of clean drinking water via The Water Project, two mangrove trees planted through an Earth Lungs Kenya restoration program, and 50 kilograms of CO₂ offset through the Burgos Wind Project.

Pricing and availability

The SEVAS Water Catcher is listed at US$79. It currently ships to Australia and the United States, with the UK and EU described as launching soon.
