In the evolving landscape of electric mobility, German startup Dolas eBike has introduced a distinctive addition to its lineup with the Defender 250. This modern utility vehicle, resembling a tandem bike, stands out for its unique design and functional features. The Defender 250 is an electric trike that combines an odd yet practical appearance with technical details not commonly found in traditional bikes.
The Defender 250’s most striking feature is its three motored wheels, each equipped with a 250-W brushless hub motor. This configuration allows for pedal-assist speeds up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph), compliant with local e-bike regulations. The central wheel is uniquely chained to the crank, supplemented by a Shimano 8-speed gearset, enhancing the riding experience.
An impressive aspect of this e-trike is its battery capacity. The Defender 250 houses a substantial 2,544-Wh battery pack within its 6061 trellis-like frame. This powerful battery can support assisted rides up to 180 km (112 miles) on a single charge, making it suitable for extended use without frequent recharging.
The utility of the Defender 250 is further enhanced by its load capacity. It can carry a total of 250 kg (550 lb), which, combined with its design, makes it an ideal choice for various carrying needs. The e-trike also features a long rail on top for mounting additional components like a second seat, static handlebar, rear rack, baskets, and more, adding to its versatility.

One of the novel aspects of the Defender 250 is its patented three-part suspension system. This system continuously monitors and adjusts the suspension, ensuring optimal ride quality, comfort, and handling, especially over varying terrains. The e-trike’s 20-inch wheels are equipped with 4-inch-wide reinforced fat tires, aiding in terrain absorption. For safety, the Defender 250 includes disc braking with a 203-mm rotor upfront and 180-mm rotors at the middle and rear.

Additional features that add to the utility and convenience of the Defender 250 include a 4-inch color LCD display for status checks and a USB charging port for mobile devices. The e-trike also sports a moto-style LED headlight housed in IPX6-rated aluminum, ensuring durability and visibility.
Weighing in at 78 kg (172 lb) with the battery, the Defender 250 is a robust yet manageable vehicle. It is priced starting at €3,190 (approximately US$3,471), with optional accessories like baskets and crates available for additional customization. However, the company has not mentioned international sales for this model.

Dolas’s website states that, “According to Regulation (EU)168/2013, bicycles with a maximum motor power of 250 watts for two- or three-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles are exempt from type approval and do not require insurance.” This e-trike represents a unique proposition in the e-bike market, offering a blend of utility, range, and distinctive design that may appeal to a broad range of users looking for an electric solution for their transportation and cargo needs.
