In the world of eco-friendly water transportation, SeaBubbles has been a name to watch for several years. The French company first captured attention with its innovative electric hydrofoil water taxi, the Bubble, which debuted in the U.S. in 2021. Now, SeaBubbles is making waves again, quite literally, with a larger and faster version of its original model – the Smart Bubble.
The original Bubble: A compact, efficient water taxi
The original Bubble is a fully enclosed, battery-electric water taxi designed to provide a smooth, eco-friendly ride. The vessel measures 5 meters long by 2.5 meters wide (16.4 by 8.2 feet) and can carry four passengers, plus a pilot. Equipped with a two-propeller electric drive system, the Bubble functions like a traditional boat at low speeds. However, when it reaches 6 knots (7 mph or 11 km/h), it lifts out of the water, cruising at 12 knots (14 mph or 22 km/h), thanks to three carbon fiber hydrofoils that automatically deploy.

This hydrofoiling feature not only reduces drag by lifting the hull out of the water but also minimizes the impact of waves, leading to a smoother ride. Additionally, it produces less wake than conventional boats. SeaBubbles’ electric propulsion system results in quieter operation and zero carbon emissions, making the vessel both eco-friendly and cost-effective. The Bubble is already in commercial use in France.
The Smart Bubble: Bigger, faster, and more advanced
At the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival, SeaBubbles introduced its newest innovation, the Smart Bubble. This updated model takes the same core principles of the original Bubble but increases size and performance. Measuring 8 meters long by 3.5 meters wide (26.2 by 11.5 feet), the Smart Bubble accommodates seven passengers, along with a pilot, making it a more practical option for larger groups.

One of the most significant improvements in the Smart Bubble is its increased cruising speed of 16 knots (18 mph or 30 km/h). To “take off,” the Smart Bubble needs to reach 10 knots (12 mph or 19 km/h), slightly higher than the original due to its larger size and weight. The vessel is powered by a 90-kWh battery, which provides approximately 1.25 hours of cruising time on a single charge. SeaBubbles has also announced plans for a longer-range 130-kWh model, which will be available in the future.
The Smart Bubble incorporates four new patented technologies, including retractable hydrofoils, further enhancing its performance and ease of use. These technological advancements are expected to position the Smart Bubble as a leader in maritime mobility as it moves closer to commercial production.

SeaBubbles’ vision for the future
SeaBubbles’ development of the Smart Bubble is part of its broader strategy to lead the electric maritime transportation market. The recent acquisition of Neocean, a company specializing in foiling technology, is a clear indicator that SeaBubbles is doubling down on innovation. By leveraging Neocean’s expertise, SeaBubbles aims to further enhance its hydrofoil systems and improve the efficiency of its electric water taxis.

With these advancements, SeaBubbles is poised to offer a scalable, sustainable solution for urban waterways and coastal transportation. As commercial production nears, the Smart Bubble could soon become a common sight in waters across Europe and beyond.
