Segway, a name often associated with self-balancing scooters, is entering the ebike market with two adventure-focused models: the Xafari and the Xyber. Initially announced at CES last year, these ebikes now have detailed specifications, pricing, and pre-order availability.
Xafari: A versatile all-terrain cruiser
Described as a “sleek, modern take on a classic step-through,” the Xafari is built for versatility. It features a 750-W hub motor paired with a torque sensor, delivering up to 175 Nm (129 lb.ft) of climbing power. This motor supports a top pedal-assist speed of 20 mph (32 km/h). Powering the Xafari is a removable 936-Wh battery, which offers a range of up to 88 miles (142 km) per charge on the lowest assist level.
For added riding flexibility, the ebike includes a Shimano Altus gearset. Its all-terrain capabilities are supported by 26-inch wheels fitted with 3-inch Kenda tires developed specifically for Segway. The stopping power comes from Tektro dual-piston hydraulic brakes with 180-mm rotors, ensuring reliable control.
The Xafari’s suspension system includes a front fork with 80 mm of travel and a rear shock offering 70 mm, both featuring adjustable preload and lockout options. Night rides are enhanced by a 1,300-lumen dual-beam headlight and a braking tail-light equipped with turn signals for added safety.

Xyber: An electric moped with serious power
Positioned as a “mid-range, light electric vehicle,” the Xyber is designed for off-road adventures and speed. With a single 1,440-Wh battery, the Xyber produces 3,000 watts of motor power and 120 Nm (88.5 lb.ft) of torque. This power doubles with two batteries installed, increasing the torque to 175 Nm.
The Xyber offers a pedal-assist top speed of 35 mph (56 km/h) for off-road use and can accelerate to 20 mph in just 2.7 seconds using its Race mode throttle. It’s worth noting that the Xyber, in its current unlocked state, is not street-legal. However, Segway plans to release a Class 2-compliant version later this year.
With a single battery, the Xyber offers a range of up to 56 miles (90 km), while adding a second battery doubles the range. Its 20-inch wheels are fitted with 5-inch-wide tires, and braking is handled by a combination of four-piston hydraulic calipers at the front and dual-piston calipers at the rear. The suspension system includes 110 mm of travel at the front and 100 mm at the rear, ensuring it can handle rugged terrain. However, the Xyber’s hefty weight of 138 lb (63 kg) might be a consideration for some riders.

Shared features and advanced tech
Both models incorporate Segway’s Intelligent Ride System, which uses an advanced gradient algorithm to provide adaptive pedal-assist. Riders can adjust settings via a bar-mounted control wheel, cycling through 12 speed and assistance levels displayed on a 2.4-inch color screen. The system also integrates with smartphones for call management and ride metrics through Segway’s mobile app.
Safety and convenience are further enhanced with automatic lighting, Apple Find My integration, and Segway GPS tracking. An AirLock proximity sensor secures the ebikes by activating mechanical locks when the rider moves away and unlocking them upon return. Riders can also sync health and fitness data to Apple and Android mobile health apps, adding a layer of functionality for fitness enthusiasts.

Over-the-air updates ensure the ebikes remain current with the latest features, and the app provides maintenance reminders and service prompts when needed.
Pricing and availability
The Xafari is priced at $2,399, while the more powerful Xyber is available for $2,999.99. Pre-orders are now open, with deliveries expected to begin next month to local dealers selected by customers. General availability is slated for March.
