Figure unveils the next-gen F.02 humanoid robot

Figure, a California-based robotics company founded by Brett Adcock in 2022, has announced its second-generation humanoid robot, the F.02. This development marks a significant leap in the company’s mission to deliver a “commercially viable general-purpose humanoid robot.” Initially aimed at enhancing productivity in commercial settings, Figure envisions a future where these robots may also serve as helpful assistants in our homes.

    Evolution from F.01 to F.02

The first-generation robot, F.01, has already demonstrated its capabilities by joining BMW’s workforce in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This experience laid the groundwork for the advanced features seen in the new F.02 model. Figure’s engineers embarked on a comprehensive redesign, upgrading both hardware and software components. The result is a robot with enhanced AI systems, improved computer vision, a more powerful battery pack, and state-of-the-art sensors and actuators.

    Advanced AI and communication abilities

One of the standout features of the F.02 is its communication capabilities, powered by custom AI models developed in collaboration with OpenAI. Equipped with onboard microphones and speakers, the robot can engage in one-on-one conversations, potentially making it a more interactive presence in both workplaces and homes. While it’s unlikely to serve as a confidant for sharing personal stories just yet, the initial interactions may resemble exchanges with advanced language models like GPT.

    Enhanced vision and decision-making

The F.02 is equipped with a vision language model that processes visual data captured by its six RGB cameras. This model enables the robot to interpret its surroundings and make autonomous decisions. The cameras, including two embedded in its animated face and an array at the back, feed information into the AI-driven vision system. This system’s computational power and AI inference capabilities are three times greater than those of its predecessor, allowing the F.02 to perform complex tasks independently.

    Improved physical capabilities

The robot’s physical enhancements are equally impressive. The F.02 features shoulder joints with 50 Nm (36.8 lb.ft) of torque and a 148-degree range of motion, knees with 150 Nm (110.6 lb.ft) and 135 degrees, and hips with 150 Nm and a 195-degree range. These specifications contribute to its ability to execute a wide range of human-like tasks. The latest iteration of human-scale robot hands, with 16 degrees of freedom and human-equivalent strength, further enhances its versatility.

    Powering the future

A significant upgrade in the F.02 is its custom 2.25-kWh battery pack, which increases energy delivery by more than 50%. Although specific runtime figures per charge have not been disclosed, this improvement suggests a longer operational period, making the robot more efficient for extended use.

    Real-world applications and future potential

The F.02 has already started its journey on the factory floor, engaging in AI data collection and use case training. This practical experience is crucial for refining its functionalities and expanding its potential applications. Figure’s goal is to create robots that not only boost productivity and efficiency but also enhance the quality of life for humans.

Reflecting on the rapid advancements in robotics, it’s intriguing to consider how these humanoid robots could integrate into our daily lives. Imagine a scenario where an F.02 robot assists with household chores, offering a helping hand during hectic mornings or providing companionship for the elderly. While these ideas may seem far-fetched now, the progress made by Figure indicates a future where such possibilities are within reach.

    A glimpse into the future

Figure’s F.02 represents a significant step forward in the field of humanoid robotics. With its advanced AI, enhanced physical capabilities, and improved power systems, it is poised to make a substantial impact in commercial settings and potentially in our homes. As the technology continues to evolve, the vision of a bipedal butler or a robotic assistant in everyday life becomes increasingly plausible.

The journey of Figure from its inception to the development of the F.02 underscores the rapid pace of innovation in robotics. As we look ahead, it will be fascinating to witness how these advancements shape the future of work and daily living.
