The Citroën H-Type van, a symbol of post-war France, has remained largely unchanged for decades, retaining its distinctive corrugated design. Now, Italian coachbuilder Caselani is bringing that nostalgic charm to the Citroën Ami with an aftermarket kit that transforms the compact electric vehicle into a modern take on the classic HY van.
Developed in collaboration with the Citroën Style Center, the Type-Ami conversion kit is designed by David Obendorfer, known for his work on retro-inspired adaptations of various Citroën models, as well as vehicles from brands like Mercedes and BMW. The kit consists of lightweight fiberglass body panels that mimic the corrugated appearance of the original H-Type van, complete with a large vertical grille, round headlights, and the iconic Citroën chevrons.
Despite the visual transformation, the core structure of the Ami remains unchanged—no modifications are made to the drivetrain, doors, or lighting. The kit is designed for easy installation, using brackets and screws, making it a feasible project even for amateur enthusiasts.
Underneath, the converted vehicle retains the Ami’s 6 kW electric motor and 5.4 kWh battery pack, delivering a top speed of 28 mph (45 km/h) and a range of 46 miles (74 km) per charge. While these figures may not be suited for long trips, the Type-Ami is primarily intended as a two-seater city commuter or a small cargo van for urban deliveries.
Initially, the Type-Ami was conceived as a one-off project for Caselani’s founder, Fabrizio Caselani. However, after showcasing the prototype at the 24-hour Citroën 2CV race in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, interest grew, leading to its development as a commercially available conversion kit. Caselani now offers the kit separately for $5,200, while a fully converted Type-Ami can be purchased for approximately $14,400.
