Stockman Products, an Australian manufacturer known for its rugged micro-camping solutions, has released the second generation of its popular Rover teardrop camper. The Rover 02 refines the original design with new features such as a multipurpose swivel griddle, an advanced Redarc power distribution system, and an integrated wine rack. The result is a compact and functional camper that remains true to its off-road roots while adding convenience for extended adventures.
Recognized for its design and build
The Rover 02 was a finalist in the 2024 Camper Trailer of the Year Awards, demonstrating its appeal among enthusiasts and experts. While it did not win, judges from ‘Camper Australia’ magazine praised its construction, stating, “The build is impressive and the fit-out top-notch, and with the bulk of the campers’ labor bill coming from offshore, it’s reasonably priced for what is an excellent camper. It is stylish and well thought out with the kitchen layout and interior comfort as good as it gets with a teardrop-style camper.” The primary critique was its limited payload capacity in certain configurations.
Rugged exterior with practical improvements
The Rover 02 maintains the fiberglass-composite construction of its predecessor but adopts a more subdued color scheme, replacing neon green accents with darker neutrals. This update enhances its rugged aesthetic while maintaining its durability.
Upgraded galley with expanded functionality
A key enhancement in the Rover 02 is the redesigned rear galley. The layout remains centered around a full-height hatch, which provides ample overhead coverage for outdoor cooking. Stockman has repositioned the sink onto a right-hand swing-out arm, freeing up counter space. This addition complements the existing left-side BBQ swing-out, creating a more spacious and efficient cooking area.
The counter tilts upward via gas struts, revealing a storage compartment that houses a 120-Ah+ lithium battery, an optional diesel water heater, and additional kitchen storage. A notable change is the switch from the previous Weber grill to a Swift grill, featuring a sunken ribbed grill/griddle top. This design allows for direct cooking and can be converted into a dual-burner stove for traditional meal preparation. The Swift unit includes a vegetable roasting rack and functions as an oven when closed.
Expanded storage and new power management system
The upper galley cabinetry has also been upgraded, incorporating a slim wine rack that accommodates up to five bottles. Adjacent to this, the Redarc control center serves as the interface for the optional Redarc electrical system, offering centralized monitoring and control of lighting, refrigeration, and power settings. This system is compatible with a smartphone app for remote access.
Interior comfort and convenience
Stockman has improved the Rover 02’s cabin with a double-seal system on both entry doors, designed in-house to keep out dust and weather. Inside, a queen-sized innerspring mattress ensures a comfortable sleep, while cushioned headboards provide back support for seated relaxation.
Newly added overhead storage cabinets increase organization, with roll-up doors at the foot of the bed. A 24-inch smart TV, air conditioning, and a diesel heater are available as optional upgrades.
Upgraded shower and awning system
For outdoor comfort, Stockman has replaced its previous shower tent and awning with Darche products. The Darche drop-down shower tent deploys in seconds, improving convenience compared to the older design. The Darche 180-degree awning extends along the trailer’s left side, providing additional shelter. The base-level “Intrepid” model includes a Joolca LPG hot shower system, while the premium “Ultra” model features an integrated diesel heater and shower system with external hookups and controls.
Pricing and trim levels
The Rover 02 is available in two trims:
- Intrepid base model: AU$59,990 (approx. US$37,235)
- Ultra model: AU$74,990 (approx. US$47,545)
The Ultra model includes a 200-Ah battery with a 200-W solar panel, shore power hookup, Redarc power management, canvas walls for the awning and rear hatch, a side ladder, air conditioning, and heating.
Chassis and suspension options
Buyers can choose between two chassis configurations:
- XT package: Features a hot-dipped galvanized steel chassis, independent coil spring suspension, and 265/65 R17 all-terrain tires for serious off-road use.
- Super Lite package: Comes with an aluminum chassis, leaf spring suspension, and 235/65 R17 all-terrain tires for lighter-duty travel on roads and gravel.
Both configurations are priced the same for the Intrepid and Ultra models.
Weight and payload capacity
The XT Intrepid has a dry weight of 2,778 lb (1,260 kg) with a payload capacity of 1,190 lb (540 kg), while the Super Lite version weighs 2,558 lb (1,160 kg) and offers a payload of 970 lb (440 kg).
The Ultra models have slightly reduced payloads due to additional features, with the XT Ultra supporting 1,100 lb (500 kg) and the Super Lite Ultra allowing 750 lb (340 kg).
Although the payload was a point of critique, the final configurations offer reasonable carrying capacities for most overland adventures. ‘Camper Australia’ magazine’s initial concerns stemmed from an earlier Ultra model with a lower gross vehicle weight rating, which limited its payload to just under 600 lb (271 kg) during testing.
Final thoughts
The Stockman Rover 02 refines an already well-regarded teardrop camper by enhancing its galley, storage, and off-grid capabilities. While the payload may not suit all users’ needs, the balance of durability, convenience, and comfort makes it a compelling option for off-road camping enthusiasts. With two well-equipped trim levels and adaptable chassis options, the Rover 02 provides a solid blend of rugged functionality and modern amenities for those looking to venture off the beaten path.
