Exhibition vehicles often make an impact for a short time before fading into obscurity, but that is not the case for Camper Schmiede’s Marilyn Onroad. This uniquely designed camper van, originally showcased at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, is now available for purchase and ready for real-world adventures. It blends a distinctive 1950s-inspired aesthetic with cutting-edge camper technology, offering an experience unlike most other RVs on the market.
A blend of nostalgia and innovation
At its core, the Marilyn Onroad is based on the MAN TGE van, though it is nearly unrecognizable after its transformation. The camper features a soft pastel color palette reminiscent of 1950s ice cream trucks, paired with modern amenities that enhance both comfort and functionality. The design is as much about aesthetics as it is about practicality, making this camper a unique travel companion.
One of the most notable features of the Marilyn Onroad is the Soul Floater, an oversized zero-gravity-style lounger extending from the rear of the vehicle. Measuring 240 x 140 cm (94 x 55 in) and capable of supporting 200 kg (440 lb), this tailgate relaxation space offers panoramic views and a comfortable place to recline outdoors. Unlike traditional camper tailgates, this lounger provides a more luxurious way to enjoy the outdoors. When not in use, it can be quickly packed away with frame supports, straps, and waterproof fabric.
Adding to the outdoor living experience, Camper Schmiede has also integrated a rooftop deck made from lightweight aluminum honeycomb panels. This elevated space serves as a seating area with scenic views or as an extended front porch for the rooftop tent. Access is provided via a glass roof hatch above the front dinette, and a 300-watt walkable solar panel array forms part of the deck’s surface, ensuring a seamless blend of sustainability and usability.

Interior comfort and practical design
Stepping inside, the Marilyn Onroad embraces a retro aesthetic with vintage Smeg appliances, including a 130-L refrigerator, slide-out coffeemaker, and a matching faucet. Unlike typical RV fridges, the Smeg unit is a full-fledged home refrigerator converted from 230 to 12 volts for van life. Camper Schmiede also incorporated an ignition-activated electromagnet to prevent the fridge door from swinging open while driving, a thoughtful touch for smoother journeys.
In an effort to maximize space, the camper van features a convertible bathroom setup. The central aisle transforms into a bathroom, with an inset bamboo drain panel on the floor and a rainfall showerhead embedded in the overhead light. A wraparound roller door provides privacy and can be adjusted to create either a private toilet space or a full shower stall. Additionally, a pull-down shade shields the fridge and surrounding cabinetry from water, ensuring that the living area remains dry.

A workspace for digital nomads
Camper Schmiede has also designed the Marilyn Onroad to accommodate remote workers. A large rear lounge area includes a long passenger-side sofa that seats multiple people, and a worktop running across the aisle, offering plenty of space for laptops and paperwork. If extra privacy is needed, travelers can opt for the front dinette with a two-leaf expandable table.
In the evening, the lounge transforms into an entertainment area, thanks to an overhead projector that casts a 40-inch picture onto the opposite wall. When it’s time to sleep, the workspace can also serve as a children’s bed, while a push-button lowerable double bed provides additional sleeping arrangements. Combined with the rooftop tent, the Marilyn Onroad comfortably accommodates up to six people.

Versatile storage and off-grid capability
Understanding that not every trip is a working vacation, Camper Schmiede has designed the van’s interior to be adaptable. The table and sofa can be removed to create a full-size tailgate area, making space for bicycles, surfboards, or other large cargo.
For those who prefer off-grid travel, the Marilyn Onroad is well-equipped with:
- Starlink satellite internet
- Revotion smart camper control system with an above-cockpit tablet
- Rear air suspension for better leveling
- 60-mm (2.4-in) front and rear suspension lift
- Camping heater and water heater
- 660-Ah Victron battery paired with a 3,000-W inverter
- Outdoor shower
- 100-L fresh water tank

A unique approach to camper van design
While the Marilyn Onroad’s layout might not suit every camper—some may prefer a permanently enclosed bathroom in a 680-cm (268-in) van—it does present an innovative approach to space utilization. Camper Schmiede has treated this project as an opportunity to explore new colors, ideas, and features, resulting in a camper that is as visually appealing as it is functional.
After its initial debut at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, Camper Schmiede has listed the one-off 175-hp exhibition model for €269,000 (US$293,180). While a second identical model is unlikely, some of its standout features, like the Soul Floater tailgate lounger, are now available as optional add-ons, priced at €1,490 (US$1,625).
For those looking for a camper that blends retro charm with modern conveniences, the Marilyn Onroad stands out as a compelling option, offering a mix of nostalgia, tech, and smart design features.
