For city dwellers seeking a middle ground between a car and a velomobile, the French-made Acticycle presents an interesting option. Designed and manufactured by a company of the same name, the Acticycle is a four-wheeled, two-seater pedal-electric vehicle capable of reaching speeds up to 45 km/h (28 mph) — a figure that flirts with urban speed limits in many cities.
The Acticycle is available in three models, each built around a riveted aluminum frame. Key features include two inline foam-padded bucket seats, a polycarbonate windshield and roof, and a 170-liter two-section lockable rear trunk for storage. Each model is equipped with a pedal-electric system where the driver’s pedaling effort is assisted by an electric motor.
The base model uses a 250-watt Valeo bottom bracket motor, achieving an electric-assisted top speed of 25 km/h (16 mph). Stepping up, the mid-range model upgrades the motor to 750 watts, raising the maximum speed to 45 km/h (28 mph). At the top end, the flagship model introduces a chainless PERS electronic drivetrain, incorporating two LMX motors delivering a combined 4,000 watts to the rear wheels. Although its top speed remains electronically limited to 45 km/h, its torque output jumps to 180 Nm (133 lb-ft), allowing it to climb slopes of up to 20% with ease.
All models come with a removable 48V lithium-ion battery. On a single charge, the base and flagship models offer a range of approximately 70 km (43.5 miles), while the mid-tier 750W version is rated for around 45 km (28 miles). Buyers can opt for a second battery to double these distances.
The Acticycle’s design also includes practical elements such as a full lighting system, Schwalbe 20 x 2.35-inch puncture-resistant tires, Tektro Augira Twin front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, dual side mirrors, and both front and rear suspension. Each version of the vehicle weighs approximately 100 kg (220.5 lb) and is rated to carry a maximum combined passenger and cargo weight of 300 kg (661 lb).
Commenting on the product, the company noted, “The Acticycle offers a new category of urban mobility — safer and more comfortable than a bicycle, lighter and more affordable than a car.”
Those interested in purchasing an Acticycle can expect pricing to start at €11,900 (approximately USD $13,557) for the 250W model, €12,900 ($14,697) for the 750W variant, and €14,400 ($16,406) for the 4,000W version. The estimated turnaround time from order placement to delivery is currently between four to six months.
