BedBrace removable bed rail helps users sit up with support on both sides

Getting from lying flat to sitting upright sounds trivial until an injury, surgery, or age makes it difficult. BedBrace is a removable bed rail built around that single motion. Unlike traditional rails that bolt to one side of the bed, BedBrace places a support on each side of the user, so the person can pull themselves upright with both arms instead of twisting toward one edge.

Where the idea came from

BedBrace was created by its founder, Elise, after a personal experience with limited mobility. She describes giving birth to her first son in 2018 via an emergency C-section, a major abdominal surgery that left her recovery and postpartum movement severely restricted. As she tells it, one of the hardest parts was the repeated transition from lying down to sitting up in bed, something that happens many times a day and night with a newborn.

During her hospital stay, a nurse taught her to use the bed’s railings to sit up and reposition. Once home without that support, she looked for a product that recreated the feeling of a hospital bed rail, something temporary, versatile, and supportive on both sides of the body. Not finding one, she designed BedBrace. She notes that generic bed rails mount to the side of the bed, which forces the user into an awkward twisting motion, while BedBrace is meant to support the user equally on both sides.

How it works

BedBrace is used from a lying position, with a rail extended on each side of the body. According to the company’s instructions, the user grips the top bars, bends the knees to roughly 45 degrees, then pulls upward with the arms while pushing through the heels to swing the hips backward. The motion is repeated, with the hands moving further up the rails each time, until the user reaches a seated position. To get out of bed, the user slides the handrail backward into a collapsed, lower profile.

BedBrace Removable Dual-sided Bed Rail
Unlike traditional bed rails, BedBrace positions a support rail on each side of the user to reduce twisting while sitting up.

The design lets the rails sit on either side of the person rather than along the bed’s edge, which is also why the company says it can be used whether someone sleeps on the left, right, or middle of the bed, with or without a headboard.

Build and specifications

BedBrace is made from aluminum tubing, which the company describes as lightweight but strong. The hand grips are wrapped in soft, non-slip rubber foam. It attaches using an adjustable anchoring support strap, and the company states it is compatible with all standard bed types and sizes, including Twin, Full, Queen, King, and California King. It is designed to be installed and removed easily, and the rails collapse on both sides.

The published specifications are:

  • Weight capacity: 400 lbs (about 181 kg)
  • Total product weight: about 6.9 lbs (3.1 kg)
  • Rails extended (L x W x H): 26.5 x 31 x 32.5 in (67 x 79 x 83 cm)
  • Rails collapsed (L x W x H): 15 x 31 x 39 in (38 x 79 x 99 cm)
  • Color: White

The company states that BedBrace is patented, and is “NIST certified to support up to 400 lbs.”

Regulatory and insurance status

BedBrace notes on its FAQ that the product is not FDA approved, describing it as a standard adult bed rail and mobility product that does not require FDA approval to be on the market. The company also says it is not yet covered by insurance, but is working toward that.

As with any mobility aid, the company advises users to follow the included manual and to consult a primary care physician with questions about whether the product is appropriate for them.

Who it may suit

The product’s own origin and customer feedback point to a few use cases: post-surgical recovery, postpartum mobility, and general age-related difficulty getting up. One customer review on the site describes buying it for a relative recovering from an unplanned C-section and calling it a help during recovery at home.

The main design distinction, support on both sides rather than a single side rail, is the clearest reason a buyer might choose it over a conventional bed rail. Buyers with significant medical needs should weigh that it is not a medical-grade or insurance-reimbursable device.
