The Xtracycle Hopper is the latest cargo electric bike designed as an efficient alternative to cars, particularly for family and cargo transport. Produced by California-based Xtracycle, the Hopper aims to provide an intuitive and compact solution for urban commuting. The company touts it as a family-friendly cargo bike that is easy to ride and accessible for a wide range of users.
The Hopper is built on a single-size aluminum frame, making it suitable for riders from 5 feet to 6.5 feet (152 to 198 cm) tall, thanks to its adjustable suspension dropper seat post. Despite its compact size, measuring 80 inches in length and 24 inches in width (203 by 61 cm), the bike has impressive carrying capabilities. It weighs 85 lbs (39 kg) but can handle a combined load of up to 415 lbs (188 kg), which includes the rider, passengers, and cargo.
The bike comes equipped with a front cargo rack and a rear cargo/kid carrier called the Hooptie, which can accommodate either one or two children, or even one adult. This makes the Hopper a versatile option for family outings or transporting goods.
Powered by a 750-watt Xtracycle rear hub motor, the Hopper can reach speeds of up to 20 or 28 mph (32 or 45 km/h), depending on regional regulations. The 720-Wh lithium battery, integrated into the down tube, provides a range of up to 60 miles (97 km) on a single charge, though this depends on factors such as terrain and the level of electric assistance used.

Additional features include an 8-speed Shimano Altus drivetrain, Hudson hydraulic disc brakes, puncture-resistant Kenda Kwick 20-inch tires, and integrated head and tail lights. For smoother rides, especially when carrying heavier loads, the bike also boasts a Suntour Mobie cargo-rated suspension fork. An integrated throttle makes it easier to get the bike moving from a standstill, particularly when loaded.

The Xtracycle Hopper will retail for $2,999, but a $500 discount is available for preorders placed before October 13th. This makes it a competitive option for those seeking a practical, eco-friendly alternative to driving in urban environments.
