Honda launches the S7 electric SUV with a 400-mile range

Honda has introduced its first-ever premium electric SUV, the S7, positioning it as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y. The S7 promises a driving range exceeding 400 miles (650 km), along with a modern design and a feature-packed interior. However, there is one major limitation—it is currently available only in China.

    Performance and range

The Honda S7 is available in two versions: a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model with a single motor and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) dual-motor configuration. The base model is equipped with an 89.8-kWh battery pack and delivers 268 horsepower (200 kW), offering a range of 404 miles (650 km) on the Chinese CLTC cycle.

For those seeking more power, the AWD variant adds a 201-horsepower (150 kW) front motor, bringing the total output to 469 horsepower (350 kW). However, the added weight and power come at the expense of efficiency, reducing the range to 385 miles (620 km). Comparatively, Tesla’s Model Y RWD offers a CLTC range of up to 368 miles (593 km), while the AWD long-range model extends up to 447 miles (719 km).

    Battery and maintenance advantages

One of the standout features of the S7 is its modular battery system, which consists of 13 interchangeable modules. Honda claims this design reduces maintenance and repair costs by up to 80%. This could be a significant advantage for long-term ownership, especially in markets where battery replacement expenses remain a concern for EV buyers.

    Interior and technology

Honda has focused heavily on comfort and technology in the S7’s interior. A key highlight is the dimming panoramic sunroof, a first for the company, which enhances cabin space and provides up to 33.8 inches (859 mm) of second-row legroom. The interior also features a three-spoke multifunctional leather steering wheel and a streaming media rearview mirror.

For audiophiles, Honda offers an optional 16-speaker Bose sound system with speakers integrated into the front headrests. Other luxury touches include a “fragrance system” designed to improve the in-cabin experience.

The Honda S7 comes equipped with a three-spoke leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, a streaming media rearview mirror, a built-in fragrance system, and an optional BOSE audio setup.

The S7’s infotainment system consists of a split 12.8-inch and 10.25-inch smart screen, along with a 9.9-inch instrument display. This setup is supported by Honda Connect 4.0, which integrates an AI-powered voice assistant and multi-screen connectivity.

    Safety and driver assistance features

Honda has equipped the S7 with its Sensing 360+ system, which includes various advanced driver-assistance technologies. These include active cruise control, pre-collision warning, lane-keeping assistance, parking assistance, and a 360-degree panoramic camera system.

Additionally, the SUV comes with a Level 2 self-driving system as standard. This system includes phone-based remote parking, allowing drivers to move the vehicle in and out of tight spaces using their smartphones.

    Exterior design and dimensions

The S7 features Honda’s new “H Mark,” which is exclusive to its next-generation electric vehicles. The design includes retractable door handles, a foot-sensing electronic tailgate, and an illuminated front emblem. While it doesn’t carry the aggressive styling of high-performance SUVs, the design is a bold move for Honda.

The SUV measures 187 inches in length, 76 inches in width, and 64 inches in height (475 by 193 by 162.6 cm), making it comparable in size to the Tesla Model Y. The cargo capacity stands at 16.6 cubic feet (471 liters), and the vehicle comes standard with 19-inch wheels, with top trims featuring larger 21-inch rims.

    Pricing and availability

The Honda S7 is priced from CN¥259,900 (approximately US$36,000) in China. It enters a competitive segment, going up against the Tesla Model Y, Onvo L60, and Zeekr 7X in the Chinese EV market.

The Honda S7 is currently available only in the Chinese market.

For now, the S7 remains exclusive to China, and Honda has not confirmed any plans for a global release. Given the increasing competition in the EV space, it remains to be seen whether the company will introduce this model in other markets in the future.
