Pedal-by-wire cargo cycle is a heavy-duty solution for urban hauling

The Intelectra, a new creation from German startup Dynamic Drives Giessen, is set to redefine urban cargo transportation with its innovative approach. This pedal-by-wire cargo cycle blends the capabilities of a mini heavy-duty truck with the maneuverability and eco-friendliness of a bicycle, offering a practical solution for businesses that need to transport heavy loads within city limits.

A compact yet capable cargo hauler

The Intelectra stands out in the world of cargo bikes with its robust design and substantial hauling capacity. Unlike conventional electric cargo bikes, which typically have a more familiar bike-like appearance, the Intelectra features a distinctive, forward-tilted cargo box measuring approximately 4 feet (1,215 mm) in length. This cargo box, housed within a sturdy aluminum frame, can accommodate up to six Eurocrates and carry a payload just shy of 1,000 pounds (454 kg). The cargo box’s placement and the bike’s overall design allow it to take on a load comparable to that of a small delivery truck, but with a much smaller environmental footprint.

One of the first things that caught my attention when I came across the Intelectra at the Eurobike show was its unique appearance. The tall, slender wheels, combined with the bulky aluminum frame and forward-tilted cargo box, make it look more like a modern motor carriage than a traditional cargo bike. It’s not just the aesthetics that make this cargo cycle stand out, but also the thoughtful design that prioritizes functionality and ease of use.

Powering the Intelectra: The pedal-by-wire system

At the heart of the Intelectra is its pedal-by-wire system, which converts the rider’s pedaling power into electrical energy. This energy is then stored in a 1,400-Wh battery that powers the cycle’s two rear hub motors. The system can generate up to 250 watts of power, with the rider’s effort directly influencing the output, thanks to an intelligent multi-controller system. Essentially, the harder you pedal, the faster the Intelectra moves, but everything is managed electronically, eliminating the need for traditional chains or belts.

The Intelectra features side-mounted handlebars for steering and an adjustable rear suspension.

The absence of mechanical drivetrain components not only reduces maintenance but also increases the longevity of the system. According to Dynamic Drives, the pedal-by-wire drive system can go for an impressive 30,000 kilometers (approximately 18,640 miles) without requiring any maintenance—a significant advantage for businesses relying on this vehicle for daily operations.

The Intelectra boasts a robust load capacity of nearly 1,000 pounds, making it ideal for heavy urban deliveries.

    Practical usage and range

In terms of practical usage, the Intelectra offers a range of up to 58 miles (93 km) on a single charge, depending on the load and powertrain configuration. This range is quite sufficient for most urban delivery routes. The battery charges in about an hour and a half, ensuring minimal downtime during the workday. The addition of regenerative braking further enhances the vehicle’s range by capturing and converting kinetic energy back into electrical energy during braking.

    Intelectra Pedal-by-wire Cargo Bike Speed
The Intelectra offers a top speed of 15.5 mph and a range of up to 58 miles on a single charge.

The standard model of the Intelectra is classified as a pedelec bike, with a top speed of 15.5 mph (25 km/h). However, for those who require additional speed or prefer not to pedal continuously, Dynamic Drives offers an optional throttle. While this feature provides non-pedaled acceleration, it also moves the Intelectra into the category of electric scooters, necessitating registration, license plates, and a driver’s license.

    Versatility and customization

The Intelectra is more than just a cargo bike—it serves as a showcase for Dynamic Drives’ modular pedal-by-wire electric drive, known as the Intelectric Serial Hybrid System (SHS). This system is designed to be highly adaptable, making it suitable for a range of vehicle types, including electric bikes, trikes, and quads.

For bike builders, the SHS offers the flexibility to position motors and batteries wherever they fit best within their designs. Additionally, Dynamic Drives provides customization options for large-volume buyers, tailoring the specifications to meet specific needs.

    Pricing and availability

The Intelectra is priced starting at €9,250 (approximately US$10,167), which reflects its advanced technology and robust capabilities. However, this base price does not include the battery, shipping, or any accessories. Buyers can choose from various add-ons, such as a passenger bench, a tonneau cover for securing cargo, and a covered canopy that gives the Intelectra a distinctive, wagon-like appearance.

The Intelectra’s optional canopy provides weather protection and transforms the cargo cycle into a covered, wagon-like vehicle for added versatility.

Dynamic Drives is currently accepting inquiries from both private consumers and businesses, with deliveries expected to begin in the fall (Northern Hemisphere). The company also offers larger and smaller versions of the Intelectra to suit different needs, though the standard model remains the flagship offering.
