Segway unveils ZT3 Pro e-kickscooter for urban and off-road adventures

Segway has introduced its latest electric kickscooter, the ZT3 Pro, as part of the newly launched ZT series at IFA 2024. This e-scooter is designed for both city commuting and off-road adventures, making it a versatile option for a wide range of riders. The ZT3 Pro promises high performance and durability, packed with technology aimed at providing a smooth and enjoyable riding experience.

Key features of the ZT3 Pro

At the heart of the Segway ZT3 Pro is a powerful 1,600-watt high-torque motor, which allows the scooter to reach top speeds of 24.9 mph (40 km/h). This speed is sufficient for most urban environments, although the global model is speed-restricted to 25 km/h (about 15.5 mph) to comply with local regulations. While not as fast as some of Segway’s more performance-oriented models like the GT series, the ZT3 Pro’s speed is still plenty to get adrenaline flowing during commutes or off-road excursions. Its motor is also strong enough to handle 25% inclines, allowing riders to take on hilly terrain with confidence.

For braking, the ZT3 Pro comes equipped with disc brakes at both the front and rear, ensuring reliable stopping power even at higher speeds or on tricky surfaces. This combination of speed and braking capabilities makes the scooter suitable for a wide variety of environments, from smooth city streets to more rugged paths.

    Impressive range and battery capabilities

One of the standout features of the ZT3 Pro is its range. Thanks to Segway’s range optimization technology, the scooter can cover up to 43.9 miles (70 km) per charge when using eco mode. For those who prefer the thrill of higher speeds, the range drops to 18.6 miles (30 km) in sport mode. Global versions of the scooter, with slightly lower top speeds, can achieve up to 50 km in sport mode. The battery is a 597-Wh unit, and recharging takes just 4 hours for a full charge. For riders in a hurry, a 30-minute flash charge adds about 6.2 miles (10 km) of range, which can be useful for quick top-ups during the day.

    Built to handle rough conditions

Segway has gone to great lengths to ensure that the ZT3 Pro can handle rough and unpredictable conditions. The scooter is constructed with a carbon-steel, IPX5 weather-resistant frame, and is outfitted with thermoplastic panels for additional durability. The design includes a telescopic fork suspension system paired with a rear swingarm coil, which helps absorb bumps and shocks during off-road rides.

The Segway ZT3 Pro rides on 11-inch all-terrain tubeless tires and provides 6 inches (152.4 mm) of ground clearance, making it well-suited for uneven surfaces and rugged paths. Segway has tested the scooter extensively, putting it through 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of pilot testing and multiple quality checks. The frame has even been tested with a 1,540-lb (700-kg) static pressure test to ensure it can withstand tough riding conditions. Segway also incorporated a Segride stability enhancement system, which works in tandem with traction control to improve ride dynamics, reduce handlebar shake, and provide better grip and control, even at higher speeds.

    Additional tech and safety features

The Segway ZT3 Pro comes with a range of additional features designed to enhance safety and convenience. The scooter is equipped with a robust lighting system that includes a 4-watt headlight, turn signals at the front and rear, a braking tail light, and an X-shaped daytime running light at the front. These features make the scooter more visible to other road users, especially in low-light conditions.

For the tech-savvy rider, the ZT3 Pro offers a 3-inch sunlight-readable LCD display that shows key ride metrics such as speed, battery life, and distance traveled. The scooter also integrates with a mobile app via Bluetooth, offering features like AirLock, which unlocks the scooter when the rider approaches. In case of theft, the ZT3 Pro can be tracked using Apple’s Find My service, adding an extra layer of security.

    Availability and pricing

The Segway ZT3 Pro is set to become available for pre-order starting September 26, 2024, in the United States, with shipping expected to begin in late October. A speed-restricted version of the scooter, tailored to meet European regulations, launched at IFA 2024 in Berlin and is expected to be available by Q4 2024. As of now, Segway has not yet disclosed pricing details for the ZT3 Pro, but given its feature set and positioning, it is expected to be priced competitively in the high-end e-scooter market.
