British folding bike manufacturer Brompton has introduced its new G Line models, designed to extend the capabilities of its iconic folding bicycles beyond urban environments. Known for their compact and nimble designs suitable for city commutes, Brompton’s latest offerings aim to bridge the gap between metropolitan convenience and off-road exploration.
The G Line series marks a significant evolution in Brompton’s product lineup. Traditionally, the company has focused on 16-inch wheel designs ideal for navigating city streets and public transportation systems. However, the new G Line models feature larger 20-inch wheels wrapped in chunky Schwalbe tires, enhancing stability and performance on rougher terrains. This change addresses the limitations riders might have faced when venturing onto uneven surfaces or tackling longer distances outside urban settings.
The Brompton G Line is available in both standard and electric versions, catering to a broad spectrum of cycling enthusiasts. The standard model comes equipped with an 8-speed Shimano Alfine hub, offering a versatile range of gears for various riding conditions. On the other hand, the electric variant features a 4-speed derailleur system paired with a new 250-Watt rear-hub motor that provides three levels of pedal assistance. This motor is designed to offer riders an extra boost when tackling hills or covering longer distances, making it suitable for both city commutes and countryside rides.
A key component of the electric G Line is its 345-Wh battery, which Brompton emphasizes has been “rigorously tested for unmatched reliability and safety.” Housed in a front-mounted bag for easy access and portability, the battery offers a per-charge range of approximately 20 to 45 miles (30 to 60 kilometers). While this range may seem modest compared to other folding ebikes on the market, it is generally sufficient for daily commuting needs. The battery can be fully recharged in four hours using the included charger, allowing riders to replenish power during the workday if necessary by simply bringing the battery bag indoors.

Enhancing the modern cycling experience, the Brompton G Line electric models are compatible with a companion mobile app. This app provides a user-friendly dashboard displaying essential ride metrics and facilitates system updates to keep the bike’s software current. For added convenience, Brompton offers an optional quad-lock phone mount, enabling riders to secure their smartphones to the handlebars for easy access to navigation and performance data.
Structurally, the Brompton G Line models share several features that contribute to their versatility and rider comfort. Both versions are built around a new steel frame available in three sizes, with adjustable stem and seatpost heights to accommodate a wide range of riders. Brompton has introduced a roller version of the G Line, which includes a rear rack fitted with small wheels. This design allows the folded bike to be rolled along surfaces like train platforms, adding to its portability. When folded, the bikes have compact dimensions of 28.3 x 26.2 x 16 inches (72 x 67 x 21 centimeters), making them easy to store and transport.

The riding experience has been enhanced with wider, custom-designed handlebars featuring ergonomic grips for improved stability and control. A wider saddle provides increased comfort during longer rides, and wide-platform pedals offer better grip and foot support. Safety has also been a priority in the G Line’s design. The bikes are equipped with Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, utilizing a 140-mm rotor at the front and a 160-mm rotor at the rear for reliable stopping power in various conditions. Integrated lighting and fenders are standard features, ensuring visibility and protection from the elements.
In terms of weight, the standard G Line model starts at 30 pounds (13.9 kilograms), while the electric version begins at 35 pounds (16.1 kilograms). This relatively lightweight design is notable for folding bikes, especially those equipped with electric assistance, and contributes to the ease with which they can be carried or maneuvered when folded.
Brompton’s commitment to quality and durability is evident in the extensive testing the G Line has undergone. “Rigorously tested over 250,000 km, first to meet industry standards, then to meet ours, G Line goes where others can’t,” the company states. “Now, you can confidently tackle everything from dusty single track to rain-soaked cobbles. Built tough with disc brake stopping power, this bike does it all with ease.”

The Brompton G Line models are scheduled to arrive in the United States starting next year. While official U.S. pricing has not been announced, pre-order information from the UK provides some insight. The standard G Line bike starts at £2,399, and the electric model is priced at £3,499. These prices suggest that Brompton continues to position its products in the premium segment of the market, reflecting the brand’s focus on quality engineering and innovative design.
