Efficient Toyota Prius-powered camper minivan at budget-friendly price

Scotland’s Campervan Co, known for crafting some of the world’s most efficient electrified camper vans, has introduced its latest innovation: the Eco Escape. Built on a Toyota Estima MPV with Hybrid Synergy Drive and electrified all-wheel drive (AWD), the Eco Escape offers a five-seat, four-sleeper configuration without compromising its everyday utility. Designed for both efficient driving and camping, it represents Campervan Co’s commitment to eco-conscious travel solutions.

    A legacy of efficient conversions

Founded in 2006, Campervan Co began its journey by converting used Japanese vans into camper vans, a tradition it continues today. In 2016, it launched what it claims was the world’s first hybrid camper van using the Toyota Alphard Hybrid MPV as its base. Over the years, the company has expanded its lineup to include all-electric and hybrid models, including the latest Eco Escape, which leverages the efficiency of Toyota’s third-generation Estima Hybrid.

Toyota Estima Hybrid as the foundation

The third-generation Toyota Estima Hybrid, approximately 190 inches (480 cm) long, serves as the platform for the Eco Escape. Its E-Four AWD system pairs a 2.4-liter petrol engine and electric motor at the front axle with a dedicated electric motor at the rear. This configuration, which inspired AWD systems in models like the RAV4 Hybrid, provides a balanced blend of efficiency, reduced emissions, and all-weather traction, making it ideal for camper van applications. Importantly, the Estima Hybrid is Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) compliant, allowing drivers to access areas like London without incurring additional daily fees.

A daily driver and camper in one

The Eco Escape’s standout feature is its dual functionality as a daily driver and a weekend camper. Campervan Co installed a Superglide Varitrak floor-rail system in the rear, supporting a rock-and-roll bench/bed that can be adjusted for legroom, storage space, or sleeping needs. This modular approach ensures that users don’t have to make significant modifications when switching between everyday use and camping trips.

    Compact, efficient kitchen design

Unlike traditional camper vans with large standing kitchens, the Eco Escape opts for a minimalist trunk-mounted Kitchen Pod. This sleek unit is hidden beneath wood covers when not in use, doubling as a flat trunk floor for groceries or gear. When revealed, it includes a small sink with a folding faucet, a compressor fridge box, and storage for an induction cooktop. An integrated water tank and leisure battery eliminate the need for LPG tanks, emphasizing efficiency and convenience.

Campervan Co founder Gary Hayes explains the philosophy behind this design:

“What we don’t want is for camper vans to be sitting on the driveway for eight months out of 10; that’s a waste of resources and doesn’t realize the incredible benefits hybrids bring to reducing emissions. We designed this hybrid camper van with everyday use in mind – we want customers using this every day for going to work or dropping the kids off at school, then kitting it out for canoeing or camping at the weekend.”

Additional features for comfort and versatility

To enhance the camping experience, the Eco Escape includes swivel front seats, a removable central dining table, and an optional two-berth sleeping area in the roof. Buyers can choose between a TentBox rooftop tent (RTT) or an available pop-up sleeper roof for added flexibility.

    Pricing and customization

The Eco Escape is priced starting at £19,995 (approximately $25,295). This base price includes a 2006 Toyota Estima Hybrid model with a TentBox RTT and mileage between 60,000 and 70,000 miles (96,000 to 112,600 km). Newer models or those with lower mileage increase the cost on a sliding scale. For those preferring a pop-up sleeper roof, an additional £1,000 ($1,265) is required.

Buyers can further customize their camper with various add-ons, including:

    • Dash cam systems
    • Portable toilets
    • Microwaves
    • Solar charging units
    • Bike racks
    • Reupholstered seats to match the camper interior
Toyota Prius-powered Camper Minivan Tight City Streets
The Campervan Eco Escape is compact and efficient, perfect for city streets and ULEZ-compliant for worry-free urban driving.

These options allow users to tailor their vehicle to their specific needs, whether for family trips, solo adventures, or daily commutes.
