A UK-based company is advancing the future of goods transportation in developing nations through its innovative electric-truck-as-a-service model. Originally conceived over a decade ago, the Ox truck, designed with input from acclaimed F1 designer Gordon Murray, was initially a diesel-powered vehicle aimed at addressing the logistical challenges in developing regions. Its flat-pack design allowed for efficient transportation and quick on-site assembly.
In 2021, the Ox truck was upgraded to an electric version, aligning with global sustainability goals. The first electric truck was shipped to Rwanda in early 2022. Unlike conventional ownership models, this service enables producers to book space on the trucks to transport goods, alleviating the burden of physically hauling goods on bicycles over rugged dirt roads.
“An EV is actually perfect for Africa because they are super cheap to operate and maintain,” explained Simon Davis, CEO of Ox, during an interview with Fast Company. “That makes them a great fit with a service business model. What we’ve done is develop the first purpose-designed electric truck for Africa.”
The electric Ox trucks maintain the robust design of the original diesel models, featuring high ground clearance and sturdy construction. However, they now run on a clean and quiet electric drivetrain powered by a 74-kWh battery. The trucks boast a range of over 90 miles (150 km) and can handle payloads of up to 4,410 pounds (2,000 kg), making them well-suited for traversing challenging terrains.

Last week, the company secured a $163 million franchise deal to expand its operations in Rwanda and introduce its service to four neighboring countries: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi. The company has already made a significant impact in Rwanda, with over 5,000 customers benefiting from its service.
“Over the last three years, Ox Delivers has made a significant positive impact on the lives of our 5,000 customers in Rwanda,” said Colin Tebbett, CEO of Ox East Africa. “Some of our customers have seen their sales increase by five times simply by using the Ox Delivers service. This new franchise will allow us to strengthen our commitment to Rwanda as well as expand into neighboring countries to radically transform the lives of thousands more traders.”

The Ox electric trucks are designed not only to address logistical challenges but also to support local commerce, providing producers with reliable and cost-effective transport solutions. This expansion is expected to improve market access and bolster economic growth in the region.
