The Matrix Truck Topper, made by Black River, takes a different approach to one of the biggest frustrations of owning a pickup truck with a bed cap: accessing cargo. Traditional toppers typically offer a rear hatch and small side windows, often forcing owners to climb into the truck bed to reach equipment stored near the cab. The Matrix replaces that familiar layout with a windowless aluminum shell and a patent-pending lifting system that opens nearly the entire upper section of the topper, providing wide, unobstructed access from both sides and the rear.
Designed for contractors, overlanders, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who regularly hauls bulky equipment, the Matrix aims to combine the security of a hard-shell topper with the accessibility of an open truck bed.
Who makes it?
Black River is a brand of Summit Products, an Iowa-based manufacturer that has been producing vehicle accessories since 1998. The company designs and manufactures products for trucks, trailers, and commercial vehicles, with the Matrix representing its latest approach to pickup-bed storage.
Unlike many aftermarket toppers that require dealer assembly, Matrix toppers ship fully assembled and are built specifically for individual truck models and bed lengths rather than using a universal design.
The Matrix lineup
The Matrix family consists of three primary models that share the same core design philosophy but cater to different users.

The Matrix GT serves as the standard model for everyday truck owners who want secure cargo storage with full-bed accessibility.
The Matrix ST builds on the same platform while incorporating integrated side toolboxes, making it particularly attractive for contractors and tradespeople who need quick access to smaller tools and equipment.
At the top of the lineup is the Matrix XL, a taller version designed to maximize cargo capacity for oversized equipment, camping gear, motorcycles, and commercial applications. While each model differs in storage volume and configuration, they all feature Black River’s signature wide-opening design, aluminum construction, and truck-specific fitment.
Heavy-duty aluminum construction
Rather than using fiberglass like many conventional pickup caps, the Matrix is built from heavy-duty 0.063-inch (about 1.6 mm) automotive-grade aluminum. Black River says the material makes the topper up to 60% lighter than comparable designs while also providing greater durability for commercial and off-road use.
The aluminum body uses a double-walled dual side-panel design with engineered reinforcement angles intended to improve structural rigidity without adding excessive weight. On the Matrix XL, the completed topper weighs approximately 180 pounds (82 kg).

The exterior receives an AAMA-certified matte black powder-coat finish that the company rates for up to 10 years of fade resistance. According to Black River, the finish also offers greater resistance to chips, scratches, and everyday wear than conventional automotive paint.
A patent-pending opening system
The defining feature of the Matrix is its patent-pending opening mechanism.
Instead of relying on fixed side panels and a single rear hatch, nearly the entire upper portion of the topper—including the roof and side sections—lifts upward as one assembly. Two heavy-duty 200-pound (90 kg) gas struts assist with raising and lowering the lid, making the process quick and requiring minimal effort.
Once opened, the design provides clear access from both sides of the truck bed and the rear simultaneously. Black River says this eliminates the need to crawl into the truck bed or unload cargo simply to reach equipment stored near the front.
Because the entire upper structure lifts away from the bed rails, long and bulky items can also be loaded from the side, something that is difficult or impossible with most conventional toppers.

Storage capacity and everyday usability
The Matrix XL offers up to 138 cubic feet (approximately 3.9 cubic meters) of enclosed cargo space, making it suitable for hauling everything from construction equipment and large toolboxes to camping gear, hunting equipment, coolers, motorcycles, and recovery gear.
When fully opened, the XL provides up to 90 inches (229 cm) of head clearance, allowing many users to stand comfortably while organizing cargo. The elevated lid also provides a clear view across the entire truck bed, making it easier to locate and retrieve equipment without moving other items first.
Despite its generous opening height, Black River notes that the topper is designed to fit inside a standard 7-foot residential garage, making it practical for everyday storage.
Security and weather protection
Rather than incorporating side windows, the Matrix uses a solid aluminum shell that keeps cargo hidden from view. The company says this windowless design not only creates a cleaner appearance but also reduces opportunities for thieves to see valuable equipment inside the truck bed.
Security is further enhanced through a dual adjustable slam-latch system paired with a single-point rear release latch. The design eliminates exposed handles and external padlocks while maintaining quick access for the owner.
To protect cargo from the elements, the topper features a premium perimeter weather seal designed to keep out rain, dust, and road debris.

For additional visibility, every Matrix includes a 15-inch (38 cm) low-profile smoked LED light that combines stop, tail, and reverse lighting into a single integrated unit.
Accessories and customization
Black River offers several factory accessories that allow owners to tailor the Matrix to different types of work and recreation.
One of the most notable upgrades is the optional Power Lift Kit, which replaces manual operation with push-button opening and closing. The company also offers an optional LED Lighting Kit to improve visibility inside the cargo area during nighttime loading.
Additional accessories include interior MOLLE storage panels for organizing tools and recovery equipment, along with roof-rack compatibility for carrying larger gear such as kayaks, rooftop cargo, ladders, and outdoor equipment, depending on the truck configuration.
Truck-specific fitment
The Matrix is engineered for specific truck makes, model years, and bed lengths rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. Black River provides an online application guide to help buyers identify the correct topper for their vehicle.
For example, the Matrix XL is available for trucks such as the 2020–2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD equipped with a 6-foot 9-inch bed, with additional versions offered for numerous other full-size pickup models.

The company notes that the Matrix is not compatible with RamBox storage systems or GM’s CarbonPro truck beds.
Installation is designed to be no-drill, allowing the topper to be mounted without permanently modifying the truck.
Warranty
The Matrix is backed by a one-year limited warranty. While this is shorter than the warranties offered by some competing premium toppers, Black River emphasizes the durability of its aluminum construction and powder-coated finish for long-term use.

The Matrix Truck Topper is available directly from Black River and through the company’s network of authorized dealers.
