Motorcycle helmets, robotic lawnmowers, even litter boxes have seen significant innovation over the past few years. But one everyday challenge has remained surprisingly difficult to solve for cat owners: how do you keep a determined cat out of a room without permanently closing the door?
Unlike dogs, many cats can leap over standard pet gates, squeeze through narrow openings, or climb mesh barriers with remarkable ease. That has left many owners relying on closed doors or improvised solutions whenever they need to keep a cat away from a particular area of the home.
A UK company called Cat-G8 has developed a product aimed specifically at that problem. Rather than adapting a baby gate or dog gate, its Full Height Cat Gate is designed from the ground up as a retractable barrier made specifically for cats.
A different approach to pet gates
Instead of stopping at waist height like most pet gates, the Cat-G8 extends from floor to ceiling, creating a much taller barrier across the opening. According to the manufacturer, the design is intended to prevent cats from climbing over, jumping over, or squeezing through the gate—three tactics that often defeat conventional barriers.
The gate uses a retractable metal construction that expands across the opening when in use. When access is needed again, it can either fold flat against one side of the doorway or be lifted off its mounting brackets entirely, leaving the opening unobstructed.

Rather than acting as a permanent fixture, it is designed to become part of the room only when required.
Designed for a variety of spaces
The company says the gate can be installed in a wide range of locations throughout a home. These include:
- Doorways
- Hallways
- Patio door openings
- Archways
- Larger open-plan spaces
This flexibility could make it useful for temporarily separating pets, introducing a new cat to an existing household, restricting access to kitchens or home offices, or keeping curious cats away from rooms containing fragile items.
Because the barrier is see-through rather than solid, it also allows light and visibility between spaces while still creating a physical boundary.
Multiple sizes for different homes
Recognizing that homes come in many shapes and sizes, the Full Height Cat Gate is offered in three height options:
- 120 cm (47.2 in)
- 176 cm (69.3 in)
- 208 cm (81.9 in)
Each height is available in numerous width configurations, fitting openings from 54 cm to 145 cm (approximately 21.3 to 57.1 inches). The product is also available in Chrome, Matte Black, and White Powder Coat finishes, allowing it to better match different interior styles.

That broad selection means homeowners are less likely to need a custom-built solution simply because they have an unusually wide opening or particularly high ceilings.
Not intended for every location
While the gate is designed for indoor use around the home, Cat-G8 also highlights situations where it should not be installed.
According to the company, it is not suitable for front doors or stairways, two locations where different safety considerations apply.
That distinction is important because the product is intended as an indoor cat-management solution rather than a general-purpose safety gate.
Solving a very specific problem
Many pet gates on the market were originally designed with dogs—or even young children—in mind. Cats present a very different challenge thanks to their agility, climbing ability, and willingness to explore vertical spaces.
Instead of trying to make an existing design slightly taller, the Cat-G8 takes a different approach by treating height as one of the primary features from the outset.
Whether it can truly outsmart every feline is another question—experienced cat owners know there is always one exceptionally determined escape artist. But for households where traditional pet gates have repeatedly failed, a floor-to-ceiling retractable barrier offers a very different solution to an old problem.

Pricing and availability
The Cat-G8 Full Height is available directly from the manufacturer in numerous size and finish combinations. Pricing starts at £99.95 (approx. US$135) for the smallest version, with larger and taller models costing more depending on their dimensions and finish.
