The VeMoo recumbent e-trike offers a novel commuting option for those who find traditional cycling uncomfortable or impractical in adverse weather. Designed by French entrepreneurs Sebastian Hurstel and Arnaud Audrezet, this semi-enclosed vehicle strikes a balance between a bicycle’s eco-friendliness and a car’s weather protection and storage capacity.
Design and functionality
At its core, the VeMoo is a recumbent tricycle with three 26-inch wheels, featuring a tilt mechanism in the front two wheels for improved cornering stability. Riders recline in a padded seat with a backrest, providing ergonomic comfort. Power is delivered through a 3 x 8 drivetrain, augmented by a 250W hub motor that produces 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) of torque. This motor, powered by a 460-Wh lithium-ion battery, offers an electric-assist range of up to 100 km (62 miles) per charge and a top speed of 25 km/h (16 mph).
The VeMoo’s braking system includes hydraulic disc brakes on the front wheels and a drum brake on the rear, ensuring reliable stopping power. Components from reputable manufacturers such as RockShox (suspension), SunRace (drivetrain), and Schwalbe (tires) contribute to the trike’s robust build.
Weather protection and storage
What sets the VeMoo apart from traditional recumbent trikes is its semi-enclosed design. Its body panels, made of DIBOND—a composite material with aluminum layers and a polyethylene core—offer partial weather protection and enhanced aerodynamics. Unlike fully enclosed velomobiles, the semi-open structure ensures proper ventilation and easy access.

The panels also incorporate practical storage solutions. A 7-liter lockable glove box, located beneath the front panel, comes with an integrated light and USB ports for charging devices. Additionally, a 55-liter lockable cargo trunk at the front can be detached and used as a rolling suitcase, adding convenience for multi-modal commuters.
For rainy conditions, the included Rainjoy Bub-up windshield and roof can be quickly installed, making the VeMoo adaptable to changing weather.

Lighting and visibility
Safety features include dual side mirrors and a complete AXA lighting system with front and rear lights, as well as turn indicators. These additions enhance visibility and safety during nighttime or low-light rides, making the VeMoo a practical choice for urban and suburban commutes.

Weight and production
The current prototype weighs approximately 80 kg (176 lb), but the production version is expected to be significantly lighter at 60 kg (132 lb). This reduction aims to improve performance and ease of handling.
Pricing and availability
The VeMoo is priced at approximately €12,000 (about US$12,696). Interested buyers can reserve their unit with a deposit of €2,000 ($2,116). Shipments are anticipated to begin next year, giving early adopters a chance to embrace this innovative commuting solution.
