In the era of sustainable, innovative transportation, Italian electric mobility company Reinova has recently launched the Tom, a folding electric scooter uniquely crafted with bamboo and aluminum. Formerly announced as the ToMove, the Tom is currently in its crowdfunding stage on Kickstarter, thanks to a creative partnership between Reinova and designer Andrea Strippoli from the Polytechnic University of Turin. ToMove is now the official spinoff company responsible for commercializing this eco-friendly vehicle.

Constructed with a minimal environmental footprint in mind, the Tom electric scooter is made predominantly of renewable or recyclable materials. Its bamboo side panels and robust aluminum frame underscore its sustainable appeal. It is worth noting that less than 10% of the scooter’s construction is plastic, supporting the firm’s commitment to green innovation.

The Tom is propelled by a 500-watt rear hub motor, delivering 30 Nm (22 lb ft) of torque, and capable of reaching a top speed of 43 km/h (27 mph). This motor is powered by a 750-Wh lithium battery that ensures efficient energy consumption. A single charge, requiring just three hours, can provide a range of up to 50 km (31 miles), making it ideal for urban commuters. For additional convenience, the battery can also be used to charge mobile devices, further enhancing its versatility.

Apart from its sustainable build and performance features, the Tom electric scooter also offers practical functionality. The scooter folds up in merely seven seconds and comes equipped with an integrated set of caster wheels, making it easily portable. Despite its compact size, it weighs 20 kg (44 lb) and can handle a maximum weight of 120 kg (265 lb), including rider and cargo.

Safety and user experience are not compromised with the Tom, which features hydraulic disc brakes, a coil-spring suspension fork, and a comprehensive lighting system with turn indicators on the handlebars. It is accompanied by an app enabling users to monitor the scooter’s location if it’s stolen or loaned, receive movement alerts when unattended, and check its battery charge level.

Assuming successful production, a pledge of €1,589 (approximately US$1,739) will secure one of these innovative scooters. This price is significantly lower than its anticipated retail cost of $2,999. With the Tom electric scooter, ToMove offers a blend of sustainability, design, and technology, propelling the future of green mobility solutions.
