Towable camper expands into inflatable 4-person retreat

Hardkorr Campers has expanded its popular Xplorer lineup with the new Xplorer 2.3 Family, a towable camper designed for adventurous families or groups of four. Building on the success of its predecessors, this model doubles the sleeping space with an innovative inflatable rooftop tent that comfortably accommodates two queen-size beds, making it suitable for a full family or four adults.

Spacious and smart design for family adventures

The Xplorer 2.3 retains the signature Aussie-style truck-canopy-without-the-truck body but swaps the previous rooftop tent for a larger, more robust hardshell version. This new tent design uses a split-folding case, similar to the RoofSpace gaining traction in the US market, but in a more spacious two-in-one configuration. The setup includes two queen beds side by side, separated by a central divider for added privacy.

The tent is deployed using an electric actuation system combined with an onboard air compressor that inflates the air beams into full form. While some manual tasks are required, such as unhooking latches and setting up ground supports, the heavy lifting is automated with the push of a button. According to Hardkorr, a single person can set up the Xplorer 2.3 in under 10 minutes, including unhitching, setting the jacks, deploying the tent, 270-degree awning, and shower tent, and sliding out the kitchen components.

    User-friendly access and practical features

One of the standout features of the Xplorer 2.3 is its staircase entry, a patent-pending design that offers a safer and more convenient alternative to traditional ladders. The staircase is built atop the front frame and includes a removable section that extends to the ground. This design provides stability and ease of access, making it particularly suitable for families with young children or pets.

The camper’s body stands at 2.3 meters (7.5 ft) tall, offering ample storage capacity with taller side cabinets, although it sacrifices the garage-friendly height of its predecessor, the Xplorer 2.0 Shorty. The spacious interior ensures that campers can carry all necessary gear for extended trips.

Well-equipped kitchen and thoughtful storage solutions

The left side of the Xplorer 2.3 features a dual-gullwing kitchen area with a full-height pantry equipped with modular shelving, a slide-out dual-burner induction cooktop, sink, and a fridge slide designed to accommodate fridge/freezers up to 115 liters. The kitchen layout includes worktops on both the fridge and stove slides, maximizing meal preparation space.

On the opposite side, dual gullwing compartments provide additional storage for luggage and cargo, while a shower tent mounts above and swings out from under the rooftop tent, serving as an outdoor shower, toilet, or privacy room. The trailer is pre-plumbed for hot water, with an optional Country Comfort LPG water heater and shower system available for added convenience.

    Notable features and considerations

One minor drawback of the Xplorer 2.3’s design is that the extended floor of the rooftop tent restricts the full opening of the left-side gullwing hatches, which could feel a bit cramped when accessing storage. Campers may need to unload essentials before deploying the tent or adapt to the limited hatch access.

The Xplorer 2.3 is well-equipped for off-grid adventures, with a water capacity of 170 liters and an upgraded electrical system featuring two 135-Ah lithium batteries and a 3,000-W inverter. Its electrocoated aluminum body is mounted on a hot-dipped galvanized steel chassis, supported by heavy-duty independent suspension with dual big bore gas shocks. The 16-inch alloy wheels and mud-terrain tires offer 50 cm (20 in) of ground clearance, enhancing off-road capability. A pair of full-size spare tires are mounted on the rear for added security during remote trips.

    Weight and towing specifications

The trailer measures 4.5 meters (14.7 ft) in length and has a dry weight of 1,500 kg (3,310 lb), with a gross vehicle weight rating of 2,200 kg (4,850 lb). This allows for a payload capacity of 700 kg (1,540 lb), giving users ample space to carry camping gear, supplies, and other essentials for extended outdoor adventures.

    Pricing and availability

Hardkorr is currently offering the Xplorer 2.3 Family at a special preorder price of AU$39,990, with the standard retail price set at AU$44,990. Deliveries are expected to begin in March.
