Clever teardrop trailer is a dedicated mobile base camp for mountain bikers

Utah-based Escapod, known for its sleek, composite teardrop trailers, has introduced a new camper specifically tailored to the needs of mountain bikers, ebikers, and cycling adventurers. The new model, named Topo2 MTB, builds upon Escapod’s existing Topo2 trailer platform and integrates a host of bike-focused features—transforming the compact camper into a mobile workshop and base camp for serious two-wheeled exploration.

This latest addition joins Escapod’s existing Topo2 lineup, which previously included the Nomad (base-level) and the Voyager (more fully outfitted version). The Topo2 MTB now debuts as the third member of this range, enhancing the line-up with a specialized focus on the biking community.

    A return to Escapod’s roots

Escapod’s co-founder, Chris Hudak, emphasized that the new trailer has a personal connection to the company’s beginnings. “Mountain biking – and being able to easily access all kinds of rugged places to ride – is what led my wife Jen and I to create the Escapod brand in the first place,” he said. “We built out the very first model a decade ago to fuel our own weekend mountain biking adventures, and that design inspired us to start a company. So building out the Topo2 MTB is in many ways coming full circle for us. This is more than just a comfortable place to sleep – it’s the ultimate mobile base camp for riding.”

Over the last decade, Escapod has steadily evolved its trailer designs. What began as a classic wood pod clad in aluminum has now matured into a high-end composite shell mounted on a customized galvanized steel chassis. This chassis is engineered for off-road performance, featuring Escapod’s in-house-developed independent suspension and a ground clearance of 23 inches (58 cm), making the trailer well-suited to rough terrain and remote trailhead access.

    Bike-friendly features at the core

The hallmark of the Topo2 MTB is its tailored support for bikes—particularly ebikes, which have additional requirements for transport. Escapod achieves this through a unique rear-mounted system called the Switchback Hitch. This swivel-mounted bar incorporates its own hitch receiver and bull bar with Rotopax mounts for extra fuel or water. The bar locks in three different positions and is removable when not needed.

Attached to the Switchback Hitch is Küat’s newly launched Piston Ion platform rack, designed specifically to handle heavier ebikes. The rack supports up to 80 lb (36 kg) per tray and includes two trays, each equipped with fast-acting clamping arms that grip the bike tires without touching the frame. This design ensures secure transport while preventing frame damage—a key requirement for high-end carbon or alloy bikes.

The hitch also supports a slide-action clamp from Feedback Sports, effectively turning the back of the trailer into a mobile bike repair stand. Whether it’s fine-tuning a derailleur, adjusting brakes, or cleaning up after a muddy trail session, the clamp provides stable support for field maintenance and quick adjustments.

One of the most functional aspects of the Switchback Hitch is its swivel capability. Rather than having to remove bikes to access the galley (as is common with many hitch-mounted racks), the Switchback Hitch allows users to swing the entire rack out of the way. This design solves a frequent pain point for campers—especially when stopping for a quick meal or snack en route.

A dual-purpose galley and bike workshop

The Topo2 MTB’s rear galley retains the same core setup as other Topo2 models, with a slide-out dual-burner stove, a rectangular sink, a fridge/freezer or cooler, and a stainless steel countertop. However, the MTB version introduces new functionality specific to cyclists.

One notable upgrade is the cutting board/cabinet door above the sink, which on this model doubles as a tool board. The reverse side of the board houses a complete Feedback Sports Team Edition bike toolkit, putting hex wrenches, screwdrivers, and other essentials within arm’s reach of the repair clamp. The long stainless steel countertop serves as a workbench, allowing users to perform mechanical work on the trailer itself—an unusually practical addition for a camping trailer.

    Backcountry readiness and comfort

While the Topo2 MTB is clearly optimized for cyclists, it doesn’t skimp on comfort or all-terrain functionality. With its elevated chassis and high clearance, the trailer is equipped to traverse rough roads and backcountry paths. It includes an outdoor shower, which serves the dual purpose of cleaning both the rider and the bike after dusty or muddy rides.

Inside, the insulated cabin features a queen-size memory foam mattress, offering a restful alternative to rooftop tents or ground sleeping. Escapod has also integrated an onboard electrical system and a 79.5-liter fresh water tank, ensuring basic amenities are always available even when off-grid.

    Purpose-built for a specific audience

The Topo2 MTB may not appeal to every outdoor enthusiast, particularly those who don’t travel with bikes. But for riders—especially those with high-end mountain bikes or ebikes—it offers a unique combination of transport, shelter, maintenance space, and cooking capability in a compact footprint. It essentially consolidates multiple gear needs into a single towable unit, reducing setup time and simplifying logistics.

Escapod officially announced the Topo2 MTB at a price of US$53,990, with its public debut taking place at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California. Additional specifications and standard equipment details are expected to follow after the trailer’s full unveiling.

While not a universal solution, the Topo2 MTB represents a focused approach to solving common pain points for active cyclists who venture far from paved roads. It blends off-road towing capability, campsite convenience, and bike repair functionality into a compact and thoughtfully designed package. For those who live for the ride and want to stay ready between trails, it may prove to be a valuable travel companion.
