StarVan’s sleeping pod expands van living comfort

Living in a camper van often requires making sacrifices, especially when it comes to space. However, StarVan has introduced a smart solution to this common challenge with its new rear expansion module, designed for their Rebel and Cruiser models. This innovative addition allows adventurers to maximize their living space while maintaining comfort, especially when parked for overnight stays.

Both the Rebel and Cruiser models begin as standard Mercedes Sprinter vans, which are known for their versatility and durability. StarVan’s signature feature, the patented bedroom extension, is crafted from XPS (extruded polystyrene) board. This module can be manually pulled out from the back of the van to extend the vehicle by 1.2 meters (3.9 feet). For those who prefer convenience, a motorized version is available as an upgrade.

This expansion creates a spacious raised sleeping area that measures 140 x 210 cm (55 x 82.6 inches), providing plenty of room for a large bed. Additionally, the setup includes 932 liters of storage space underneath the bed, ideal for stowing bulky gear. The storage area can be accessed both from inside the van and from the outside, enhancing convenience during travel.

The van’s body is well-insulated, with closed-cell foam and 8-mm plywood walls lined with synthetic felt, ensuring adequate protection from outdoor elements. If additional warmth is required, a Truma diesel heating system is installed to keep the van cozy during colder nights.

The raised sleeping nook fits a single or double mattress, with a storage box beneath for added convenience.

Energy efficiency is another key feature of the StarVan models. A 160-Wp solar panel is mounted on the roof to charge the 100-Ah LiFePO4 battery, which can be upgraded to a 300-Ah capacity for those who need more power. The kitchen is equipped with a dual-burner stove that runs on a 20-liter gas container stored beneath the floor, though an induction cooktop can also be installed if preferred. The kitchen area includes a wood-topped preparation space and a stainless steel sink. Chilled items can be kept in the 70-liter fridge, which is conveniently accessible from both inside and outside the van.

A rear window and overhead lighting brighten the 55 x 83-inch sleeping area.

For water management, the van comes with a 100-liter fresh water tank and a 65-liter waste water tank, ensuring that water needs are covered during extended trips. The bathroom is designed for efficiency as well, featuring a Trelino composting toilet with a magnetic lid, a folding sink, and a stainless steel shower tray. Travelers who require a more spacious setup can opt for a pull-out bathroom with a larger shower and Plexiglass doors.

StarVan transforms the Mercedes Sprinter into either a 4×4 Rebel or a rear-wheel-drive Cruiser configuration.

The Rebel version of the StarVan is built for off-road adventures, featuring all-wheel drive, a 190-hp engine, and a nine-speed automatic transmission. For those who plan on tackling rough terrain, an off-road package and all-terrain wheels are available as optional upgrades. The Rebel’s empty weight is 3,100 kg, making it sturdy yet mobile for off-road travels.

In contrast, the Cruiser version comes with rear-wheel drive as standard, which reduces its empty weight to 2,850 kg. While AWD isn’t available for the Cruiser, it can be fitted with higher suspension, speed-mountable differential, and all-terrain tires, making it suitable for rougher roads.
