Hase Bikes, a renowned name in the adaptive and recumbent trike market, is marking its 30th anniversary with a modern take on its original recumbent trike. The Kettwiesel ONE, equipped with a range of advanced features, reflects the company’s commitment to providing high-quality, adaptable mobility solutions for riders of all sizes and abilities.

A brief history of Hase Bikes

Marec Hase, the founder of Hase Bikes, began his journey into the world of recumbent bikes as a teenager. His innovative designs, including a recumbent tandem trike and a folding recumbent, garnered accolades in state science and technology competitions. These early successes laid the foundation for Hase-Spezialräder, which he established in 1994 to create unique trikes and semi-recumbent tandems.

The original Kettwiesel trike was handcrafted in 1995, marking the start of Hase Bikes’ journey. The company has since evolved, but its mission remains steadfast: to build high-quality bikes and trikes that enhance mobility for as many people as possible, regardless of age, size, or physical ability.

The Kettwiesel ONE: Features and specifications

The Kettwiesel ONE is a testament to Hase Bikes’ continuous innovation. Its aluminum frame features a telescoping front boom, allowing it to accommodate riders ranging from 1.10 meters (3.6 feet) to 2 meters (6.56 feet) tall. The seat tilt angle is adjustable, and the seat itself can be swapped out in just two steps, providing a customizable experience for each rider.

Hase Bikes Kettwiesel ONE e-Trike Steering Options
The Kettwiesel One offers versatile steering options with both under-seat steering and an adjustable above-seat handlebar.

The trike’s handlebars are also adaptable, with adjustable height, width, and angle. Riders can use the supplied 5-mm hex key to tweak the suspension, grip position, and boom length. The hex key can be secured to the frame, ensuring adjustments can be made on the go.

The Kettwiesel ONE is equipped with adjustable MacPherson suspension, offering 70 mm of travel and a load capacity of up to 140 kg (309 lbs). This ensures a smooth and stable ride, even on uneven surfaces. Riders can choose between two steering configurations: under-seat steering or an above-seat handlebar. The above-seat handlebar can be moved forward for easy access and then pulled back into place for riding.

Practical design for everyday use

Hase Bikes has designed the Kettwiesel ONE with practicality in mind. For those with limited storage space, the trike’s front end can be raised to park on its rear wheels. When compacted to 135 x 56 x 88 cm (53 x 26 x 34 inches) with the front wheel removed, the trike can even fit into the back of a hatchback car. However, given its weight of 35 kg (77 lbs), some assistance may be needed to load and unload it.

The standard Kettwiesel ONE is powered by a Shimano Steps 6100 mid-drive motor and a 504-Wh battery, providing pedal assistance up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph). It features a Nexus 8-speed hub, three 20-inch wheels with Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, and a combination of mechanical front brakes and hydraulic disc brakes at the rear.

Options and pricing

The Kettwiesel ONE is available in several configurations to meet different needs and preferences. The version with above-seat handlebars starts at €7,990. A model with a Vario Comfort seat and under-seat steering is priced at €8,490. For those seeking more power, the Plus version, featuring a Shimano EP8 Cargo mid-drive motor, a 630-Wh battery, and an Enviolo hub, is available from €10,950.

Adaptability and customization

Marec Hase emphasizes the importance of adaptability in special needs and adaptive cycling. The Kettwiesel ONE’s basic features provide a strong foundation for customization. The trike can be further tailored with a wide range of accessories to enhance comfort, carry cargo, and meet individual physical needs. Additional technical options, such as automatic shifting and single-hand controls, are also available, making the Kettwiesel ONE a versatile choice for a diverse range of riders.
