AIR ONE aims to make personal eVTOL ownership a reality

The idea of owning a personal aircraft has long been reserved for pilots with access to private airfields and conventional airplanes. Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are changing that vision by eliminating the need for runways and making flight more accessible to individual owners.

Among the companies pursuing that goal is AIR, whose AIR ONE has been designed specifically as a consumer-owned electric aircraft rather than an air taxi. Instead of building an aircraft for commercial operators, AIR is focused on creating an eVTOL that individuals can own, transport, and operate more easily than traditional aircraft.

Built for personal ownership

Unlike many eVTOL projects aimed at urban ride-sharing services, the AIR ONE has been developed with private ownership in mind.

The aircraft combines vertical takeoff and landing capability with forward flight, allowing it to operate without a conventional runway. This opens possibilities for recreational flying and personal transportation while maintaining the benefits of electric propulsion, including quieter operation and lower mechanical complexity than many traditional aircraft.

Its sporty appearance also reflects its intended role as a recreational aircraft rather than a commercial shuttle.

Fly-By-Intent simplifies flying

One of the AIR ONE’s standout technologies is its proprietary Fly-By-Intentâ„¢ control system.

AIR ONE Personal eVTOL Fly-By-Intent
The Fly-By-Intentâ„¢ system lets pilots point the aircraft in the desired direction while the flight computer manages speed and altitude.

Instead of requiring pilots to constantly manage multiple flight parameters, the system continuously maintains a safe flight envelope while helping mitigate hazards. The pilot simply points the aircraft in the intended direction using a centrally positioned joystick, while the aircraft automatically manages direction, speed, and altitude until new inputs are provided.

According to AIR, this approach reduces pilot workload and makes operating the aircraft more intuitive.

The cockpit also includes a secondary control stick that can be used during flight training or whenever additional control input is required.

Single-hand joystick controls

Rather than using traditional aircraft-style controls, the AIR ONE features a center-mounted joystick designed for single-hand operation.

This simplified interface aligns with the Fly-By-Intent concept, allowing the pilot to command the aircraft naturally instead of continuously adjusting numerous flight controls.

Designed for easier transport and storage

Transporting an aircraft can often be a logistical challenge, but AIR has attempted to simplify the process.

The AIR ONE features a patented wing-folding mechanism that allows one person to fold the wings in approximately five minutes. Once folded, the aircraft can fit inside an optional custom trailer designed specifically for extended transport.

A center-mounted joystick enables intuitive single-hand control of the AIR ONE.

This trailer-based approach makes it possible to tow the aircraft to different flying locations rather than permanently storing it at an airfield.

Electric power with fast charging support

The AIR ONE is powered by four independent 74 kWh lithium-ion battery packs, providing redundancy through a distributed battery architecture.

Charging options are designed to offer flexibility depending on available infrastructure.

According to AIR, the batteries can be recharged in approximately:

  • 6–8 hours using a standard charger
  • Around 1 hour when using compatible superchargers

The ability to support fast charging could make turnaround times considerably shorter between flights.

Safety-focused flight assistance

Because eVTOL aircraft rely heavily on electronic flight control systems, software plays a significant role in safety.

AIR says its Fly-By-Intent system continuously keeps the aircraft within a safe operating envelope while assisting the pilot throughout the flight. Rather than replacing the pilot, the technology is intended to simplify operation and reduce workload by managing many of the aircraft’s flight parameters automatically.

AIR’s patented folding-wing mechanism allows one person to prepare the aircraft for transport in about five minutes.

At the time of writing, AIR has not announced customer deliveries of the AIR ONE or published a timeline for general availability. The aircraft continues to progress toward certification and commercialization.

Final thoughts

While many eVTOL manufacturers are concentrating on commercial air taxi fleets, AIR has taken a different approach by focusing on individual ownership.

Features such as Fly-By-Intent controls, a single-joystick interface, folding wings, trailer transport, and fast-charging capability all reflect an effort to make electric personal aviation more practical for private users.

There are still certification and commercialization milestones ahead, but the AIR ONE provides a glimpse of how personal electric flight could evolve beyond concept vehicles into aircraft designed for everyday owners.
