Telescoping caravan expands into a two-bedroom home for eight

At first glance, the Beauer X8 looks like an unusually tall but otherwise conventional caravan. Pull into a sufficiently large campsite, however, and its body slides sideways to create something much closer to a compact holiday home.

The French-built caravan uses three nested sections that fit inside one another for travel. At the campsite, electric cylinders extend the outer sections at the push of a button, increasing the body width from approximately 2.05 m (6.7 ft) to 4.8 m (15.7 ft). The transformation reportedly takes around 60 seconds and creates approximately 30 sq m (323 sq ft) of interior space.

That is enough room for two private bedrooms, two convertible lounge areas, a full kitchen, an enclosed bathroom and sleeping space for as many as eight people.

Three caravan sections become one large living space

The Beauer X8 expanding caravan is based on the telescoping concept the company has used in its smaller models for years. Instead of attaching conventional slide-outs to a fixed central room, Beauer divides much of the interior among three curved modules that nest together when the caravan is closed.

Furniture is arranged to fit inside this compressed footprint during travel. As the two side sections extend, the nested furnishings move into their usable positions, eliminating much of the manual assembly normally associated with a transforming interior.

Once opened, the X8 provides around 30 sq m of living space inside a body measuring 4.8 m wide.

The X8 remains 6.65 m (21.8 ft) long and 2.9 m (9.5 ft) high whether open or closed. Its roughly 2-m travel width keeps it within the general road footprint of a conventional caravan, while the expanded body provides considerably more room at the destination.

A layout designed to sleep eight

The front portion of the X8 is divided into two social spaces. One side contains an L-shaped dining area with a table for eight, while the other functions as a lounge with space for an optional wall-mounted television. Both seating areas convert into 140 × 200-cm (55 × 79-in) double beds.

Separate dining and lounge areas give the expanded X8 the feel of a small apartment rather than a conventional caravan.

At the opposite end are two separate bedrooms, each equipped with a 140 × 200-cm double bed and a foam mattress. A two-compartment walk-in storage area separates the rooms. Beauer also shows an alternative layout that replaces the second bedroom with a desk, creating a six-person arrangement for owners who would rather have a private office.

Two private bedrooms distinguish the X8 from smaller expandable caravans, while one room can alternatively become an office.

Windows include insect screens and blackout blinds, while 40-mm sandwich panels insulate the structure. Interior finishes can be ordered with light- or dark-wood flooring, gray and white cabinetry, and fabric or imitation-leather seating in a choice of colors.

A proper kitchen and enclosed bathroom

The standard kitchen includes a 190-L refrigerator with a freezer compartment, a sink, three-burner gas cooktop, cookware drawers, spice storage and a pull-out waste bin. Available upgrades include an induction cooktop, gas or electric oven, microwave and compact dishwasher.

The bathroom has a separate 70 × 70-cm shower enclosure rather than requiring occupants to shower over the toilet. It also contains a sink, mirror, storage and a Thetford cassette toilet. A 25-L electric water heater supplies hot water, and an exterior shower connection is included.

The X8’s kitchen can be expanded with appliances including an oven, microwave and compact dishwasher.

Fresh- and gray-water tanks each hold 55 L. Buyers can also specify a compact washing machine and a Clesana dry-wrapping toilet, although optional equipment must be considered carefully because of the caravan’s limited carrying capacity.

Battery power, solar charging and climate options

Standard equipment includes a 150-Ah lithium battery, LED lighting, electrical and USB outlets, and a control panel monitoring the water, temperature, battery and lighting systems. The battery can be upgraded to 200 Ah, while four flexible 100-W solar panels can provide up to 400 W of solar capacity.

The options list also includes two chassis-integrated Dometic heating and cooling units, Webasto underfloor heating and water heating, a Truma electric heater, a 4.5-m Thule awning and an enclosed Safari Room. Remote-controlled dual-motor movers are available to help position the heavy twin-axle caravan at a campsite.

Large living space comes with practical considerations

The X8 rides on a twin-axle AL-KO chassis with shock absorbers and a hitch stabilizer. Beauer lists an equipped weight of approximately 2,600 kg (5,732 lb) and a maximum permitted weight of 2,700 kg (5,952 lb), leaving a stated payload of only 100 kg (220 lb).

That is a modest allowance for a caravan intended to accommodate a large family. Filling the 55-L fresh-water tank would add around 55 kg (121 lb) if the water counts toward the trailer’s travelling weight, before luggage and other supplies are loaded. The company also notes that equipped weight depends on the selected options, so buyers should confirm the certified weight and remaining payload of their exact configuration.

The three curved modules nest together for towing and extend sideways after the caravan reaches its destination.

A suitably rated tow vehicle will be essential, along with the correct licence, registration and insurance for the owner’s country. Campsite choice matters too: the body alone reaches 4.8 m across when open, and the optional awning requires still more lateral space.

Pricing and availability

The Beauer X8 currently starts at €109,990 before optional equipment, delivery and local taxes. Beauer advertises a two-year warranty and says the caravan is designed and manufactured at its facility in Cholet, France.

The company’s general FAQ indicates an average delivery time of more than six months. It accepts direct international orders and says delivery is available by truck within Europe and by container outside Europe, including enquiries from prospective US customers. Certification, road legality and after-sales arrangements should be confirmed for the buyer’s destination before ordering.

The X8 will not suit every campsite or tow vehicle, but its appeal is easy to understand. It combines the road width of a conventional caravan with the separation and floor space of a small holiday home—then folds those rooms back inside one another when it is time to move on.
