Volkswagen ID. Buzz camper van reimagined with a side-popping sleeper roof

Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz has inspired a range of camper van conversions, but Dutch builder Tonke’s latest creation adds a refreshing twist. Introducing the Buzz Explorer and Trail, Tonke has unveiled a unique pop-up roof design that combines practicality and comfort, redefining the camping experience for families on the go.

A modern spin on a classic concept

Pop-up roofs are a staple of camper vans, typically following a wedge-style design that tilts forward or backward. However, Tonke’s innovative approach revives the side-lifting pop-top, a design that dates back to the 1950s. Pioneered by Dormobile, this style once adorned the Volkswagen T1, and while rare today, it remains a versatile option.

Tonke has modernized this classic concept by incorporating a design inspired by rooftop tents. The side-popping roof lifts toward the passenger side, while a foldable floor panel expands toward the driver’s side, creating a tent-like structure integrated into the vehicle. This clever mechanism not only maximizes interior standing space but also offers a near-queen-size bed, measuring 55 x 83 inches (140 x 210 cm). This spacious bed accommodates two adults comfortably and can even fit a child, making it ideal for family use.

Flexible design with outdoor living in mind

The Buzz Explorer and Trail cater to varied camping needs with modular kitchen setups. The Explorer model features a compact indoor/outdoor swivel kitchen with a two-burner induction cooktop and a 35-liter compressor fridge. While this setup optimizes cooking convenience, it limits interior seating to a two-seat rear bench that converts into a narrow bed (37 x 79 inches or 95 x 200 cm).

Shown here on the Mercedes EQV Touring, Tonke’s swivel kitchen seamlessly serves as a versatile hub for both indoor and outdoor use.

For those prioritizing space, the ID. Buzz Trail offers a different approach. By relocating the kitchen to an outdoor slide-out unit in the tailgate, the Trail accommodates a three-seat rear bench and a larger fold-out mattress (59 x 86 inches or 150 x 200 cm). The pop-up roof adds additional sleeping space, enabling the Buzz Trail to sleep up to five people, provided at least one is a child.

Both models utilize Tonke’s bidirectional sliding kitchen system, ensuring indoor cooking is possible during bad weather, enhancing the camper’s versatility.

    Additional functionality with weather protection

Tonke’s unique roof design doubles as a functional awning. Whether cooking with the outdoor kitchen or lounging beneath it, campers benefit from added sun and rain protection. This feature complements the van’s compact dimensions, making it suitable for both urban commutes and off-the-grid adventures.

    Pricing and availability

The Buzz Explorer starts at €62,500 (approximately $66,100) for the base model, excluding VAT. Adding the pop-up roof costs an additional €9,500 ($10,045). With VAT included, the Explorer’s price rises to €74,300 (around $78,575). The simpler Buzz Trail model starts at €47,600 ($50,340) before VAT, offering a more budget-friendly option for families.

Tonke is still finalizing details for the Buzz Explorer and its pop-up roof, but these models promise to bring a blend of innovation and practicality to the camper van market. For those seeking a family-friendly, multi-purpose vehicle, Tonke’s ID. Buzz conversions offer a compelling option for their next road trip.
