The Stark Varg, initially introduced as a high-performance electric motocross bike in 2021, has now evolved into a street-legal dual-sport enduro. Dubbed the Stark Varg EX, this machine combines the power and agility of its off-road predecessor with street-ready features, catering to riders in the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
The evolution of the Varg
Stark Future, a Spanish electric motorcycle manufacturer, first grabbed attention with the Varg in 2021. With a mission to outperform traditional gas-powered motocross bikes, the original Varg boasted 80 horsepower, 1036 Nm (764 lb-ft) of rear-wheel torque, and a weight comparable to a 450cc MXGP motocross bike. Its 6-kWh battery offered a riding range comparable to a full tank of gas, capable of up to six hours of trail riding.
Since its debut, the Varg has proven its prowess, clinching the UK Arenacross championship in 2023-2024 over eight rounds. The EX version builds on this legacy, offering both off-road dominance and street versatility.
Street-legal features
To meet road use requirements, the Stark Varg EX comes equipped with several additions, including a 4,000-lumen headlight, license plate, horn, flexible indicators, and a 7.2-kWh battery pack—a 20% increase in energy storage over the motocross version. These enhancements add a slight weight increase to the bike, bringing it to 120 kg (265 lbs).

The powertrain remains unchanged, delivering 80 horsepower (60 kW) and adjustable performance settings. Riders can customize power curves, peak power, and regenerative braking characteristics to suit their preferences. The bike’s flexibility allows it to transition between gentle cruising and aggressive off-road riding modes.
Licensing and accessibility
What sets the Varg EX apart is its accessibility under progressive electric vehicle regulations. Stark Future Founder and CEO Anton Wass notes, “Thanks to progressive electric vehicle regulations, even with 80 horsepower, the Varg EX can be ridden with an A1 license in Europe due to their way of measuring the low continuous power. And in many countries in Southern Europe, such as France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy, it’s even legal to ride the bike with a car license.” This feature broadens its appeal, particularly in regions where motorcycle licensing can be restrictive.

Built for dual-sport enthusiasts
While street-legal, the Varg EX is designed primarily for off-road adventures. Its tire options range from extreme enduro to rallycross, emphasizing its trail-oriented focus. The removable “military-grade” Android phone serving as the dash includes features like GPS and an off-road navigation app, making it a versatile companion for trail riders.
However, the bike’s design prioritizes connecting trails over long highway stretches, with limited suitability for extended high-speed travel. This focus ensures it remains a true dual-sport machine rather than a touring or commuter bike.
Cost and maintenance
Priced at $12,900 plus shipping and taxes, the Varg EX is positioned as a premium offering. Stark Future highlights its long-term affordability due to minimal maintenance compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) bikes. According to the company, “if you actually put hours on your dirt bikes, the Varg’s vastly reduced maintenance makes it ‘actually the most affordable enduro bike you could own’ even if it’s one of the most expensive you could buy.”

Future innovations
Stark Future’s ambitions extend beyond the Varg EX. The company plans to incorporate 3D metal printing into its manufacturing process, potentially revolutionizing design possibilities for future models. With production of the Varg EX already underway, Stark Future continues to establish itself as a prominent player in the electric motorcycle market.
