Carrying ski equipment can be cumbersome, especially when juggling both skis and poles. To address this issue, San Francisco-based startup Yardsale has introduced a line of magnetic ski poles designed to simplify the task. These poles stick together via integrated magnets, making them easier to carry in one hand.
Developed by Kelly McGee, an engineer with experience at MIT and Apple, the Yardsale ski poles are crafted from durable 7-series aluminum and feature steel ice-crushing tips. What sets these poles apart is the incorporation of magnets in their foam handles and polymer baskets, allowing them to cling securely to each other when not in use.
To ensure a snug fit when joined, the poles have asymmetrically designed baskets with one flat side facing inward. This design does not compromise their performance on the slopes. Additionally, the poles include removable straps made using a computer-controlled 3D knitting process, which keeps the hand loops open and easy to access.
Yardsale offers three models of ski poles to cater to various skiing needs. For recreational skiers, there is a model priced at US$217, while more adventurous skiers can opt for a higher-end model priced at US$275. Additionally, a US$217 model is available specifically designed for kids, ensuring options for skiers of all ages and experience levels.
The two adult models weigh approximately 1.3 lb (590 g) per pair, depending on the chosen length. Buyers can further customize the poles by selecting from up to five different colors for the shafts, handles, straps, and baskets—or opt for a uniform color scheme for a minimalist look.
