Badger Extreme trailer’s side wall folds out to create an entire new room

The world of camping trailers is full of pop-tops, tent trailers, and compact caravans, but the Badger Extreme combines elements of all three into something genuinely different. Built in South Africa by Badger Caravans, this expandable off-road camper uses a unique fold-out design that transforms a compact towing trailer into a surprisingly spacious camping setup within minutes.

The concept blends the hard-shell protection of a caravan, the space efficiency of a pop-top, and the flexibility of a tent camper. The result is a trailer that remains relatively compact on the road while providing significantly more living space once parked.

The Badger series stands out thanks to an unusual expansion mechanism. Rather than relying solely on a pop-up roof, a large section of the fiberglass roof and sidewall folds outward to create an additional room within the floor plan. The expansion increases both headroom and interior floor space while maintaining the simplicity of a single-axle trailer.

South Africa has developed a reputation for innovative off-road camping equipment, and the Badger is a good example of that design philosophy. While many compact campers prioritize lightweight construction above all else, the Badger focuses on maximizing usable living space without requiring a large tow vehicle or a lengthy setup process.

Exploring the off-road prowess of the Badger Extreme camper trailer.

The flagship Badger Extreme measures 5,130 mm (16.8 ft) in length and 1,700 mm in width. When closed, it stands 2,100 mm high. Once deployed, interior height increases to approximately 2,620 mm, creating a far more open living environment than the trailer’s compact exterior dimensions suggest.

Unlike many compact trailers that simply raise a roof section, the Badger’s transformation centers around a fold-out sidewall expansion. During setup, the right-side wall swings outward and downward while a section of the roof pivots into position, creating an entirely new living area. Grab handles assist with deployment, while telescopic support legs integrated into the roof rack provide structural support.

The process is straightforward and highly visual, making it one of the trailer’s most distinctive features. What appears to be a compact caravan during transport expands into a much larger campsite once fully deployed.

Telescopic legs extend from roof crossbars for sturdy bedroom expansion support.

Once expanded, the interior sleeping area is enclosed by weather-resistant canvas walls. The bed functions as a daytime lounge before extending into a large sleeping area at night. The design maintains access to the center aisle, allowing occupants to move through the trailer without climbing over the bed.

The additional headroom created by the expansion makes the interior feel significantly larger than the trailer’s dimensions suggest, especially compared with traditional teardrop-style campers.

The remainder of the interior is efficiently organized with storage compartments, cupboards, and access to the trailer’s outdoor kitchen system. One of the Badger’s highlights is its slide-out kitchen, which extends from the side of the trailer and includes a two-burner gas cooker, storage compartments, food preparation space, and washing facilities.

The versatile bed transforms from a daytime sofa to a 190-cm long nighttime sleeping space, leaving the aisle open for full trailer access.

All current models include a 110-liter water tank, a Hansen 15-liter gas/electric geyser, a 12V water pump, and hot-and-cold running water. The kitchen setup is designed to provide much of the functionality of a larger caravan while maintaining the compact footprint of the trailer.

The electrical system includes a 100 Ah 12V power setup, 220V shore-power capability, a Victron 220V-to-12V charger, LED lighting, power outlets, and battery monitoring. Additional solar charging equipment is available as an option.

The Badger is configured to sleep two people as standard. Depending on the model and options selected, owners can also add a shower cubicle or auxiliary tent structures to increase privacy and functionality during extended trips.

Badger Extreme Expanding Camping Trailer Slide Flip Fold
Badger camping trailers are uniquely designed to slide, flip, and fold in innovative ways.

The Extreme model includes a fold-down shower system as standard, while shower facilities are available as optional equipment on the X-Over and Lite variants.

Three models available

Badger currently offers the expandable camper concept in three variants: Extreme, X-Over, and Lite.

The flagship Extreme is designed specifically for demanding off-road travel. It rides on a hot-dip galvanized chassis with independent suspension, 16-inch steel wheels, rock sliders, gravel-protection checker plate, lockable spare wheel, fridge/freezer, slide-out kitchen, fold-down workspace, vanity cupboard, and fold-down shower. The trailer weighs 1,240 kg tare and has a 1,750 kg GVM.

The X-Over serves as the mid-range option. It uses an aluminum chassis and leaf-spring suspension, reducing tare weight to 900 kg while maintaining many of the camping amenities found in the Extreme. Several features, including solar charging systems, shower equipment, and additional storage options, are available as optional upgrades.

The entry-level Lite model is the lightest trailer in the lineup at just 650 kg tare and 750 kg GVM. It retains the same fiberglass body concept and many of the core camping features but omits some premium off-road equipment and luxury amenities in exchange for a lower weight and simpler specification.

Pricing and availability

According to Badger Caravans’ latest published pricing, the lineup currently starts at:

  • Badger Lite: R425,000 (approx. US$25,600) including VAT
  • Badger X-Over: R475,000 (approx. US$28,600) including VAT
  • Badger Extreme: R525,000 (approx. US$31,600) including VAT

Actual pricing may vary depending on selected accessories and optional equipment, including solar charging systems, shower cubicles, storage upgrades, and additional camping accessories.

For travelers seeking a compact camper that expands into a much larger living space once parked, the Badger lineup offers one of the more unusual solutions currently available. Its combination of fiberglass construction, off-road capability, integrated utilities, and patented fold-out living area makes it a distinctive alternative to traditional caravans, teardrop trailers, and pop-top campers.
