In the ever-evolving world of outdoor camping, the Beyond X rooftop hub tent by Danish company Fjordsen stands out as a groundbreaking innovation. Launched this year, the Beyond X has swiftly gained attention for its unique design and substantial livable volume, offering an unparalleled roof-camping experience. This review delves into the features, advantages, and considerations of the Beyond X, providing an insightful analysis for camping enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers.

Fjordsen, known for its vibrant inflatable rooftop tents since 2020, has now ventured into a new realm with the Beyond X. This hub-style rooftop tent (RTT) boasts an impressive height of nearly 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the vehicle roof, offering one of the most spacious accommodations in roof camping.

The Beyond X’s design is a first of its kind, utilizing a volume-maximizing hub-style construction similar to those found in ice fishing huts, modular Qube tents, and overland ground tents. Fjordsen’s experience in ground-level hub tents is evident in the Beyond X, which elevates the hub concept to new heights – quite literally.

The primary advantage of hub tents lies in their rapid setup. Unlike traditional ground tents, the Beyond X utilizes an integrated frame that pops and locks into place via ventral pole hubs on the sides and roof. Although quick setups are common in rooftop tents, the Beyond X excels with an estimated two-minute setup time. This efficiency is particularly beneficial for campers who frequently move locations.

The included telescoping ladder allows for convenient side access.

Another notable feature is the tent’s interior space. The hub design allows for a cube-like shape, maximizing the internal volume. The largest Beyond X model offers an impressive 6.3 cubic meters (222.5 cubic feet) of interior space. Measuring 2.2 x 2.2 meters (87 x 87 inches), the floor can comfortably accommodate three to four people. The roof height of 1.4 meters (4.6 feet) provides ample sitting room and standing height for children, creating a comfortable and spacious environment.

The Beyond X rooftop tent conveniently folds in half, making it compatible with a wide range of vehicles.

To put the Beyond X’s volume into perspective, it’s helpful to compare it with a vehicle like the four-door 2024 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The Wrangler Unlimited has a total passenger volume of 3 cubic meters (104 cubic feet) and a cargo volume of 0.9 cubic meters (31.7 cubic feet) behind the rear seats. In contrast, the Beyond X offers more than double this space, underscoring its expansive design.

However, this volume isn’t purely advantageous. The Beyond X’s large, block-like shape may face challenges in windy conditions, potentially impacting stability. Developed in Denmark, a country renowned for its wind energy, it’s possible that Fjordsen has rigorously tested the Beyond X under harsh conditions. Nevertheless, potential buyers should consider this factor, especially if planning to camp in windy locales.

Surrounding windows offer both ample airflow and scenic external views.

Despite its size at the campsite, the Beyond X is relatively compact when folded, measuring 220 x 110 x 35 cm (87 x 43 x 14 inches) for transport. It weighs 54 kg (119 lb), excluding the separately sold mattress. The tent is constructed with fiberglass poles and hubs, silicone-coated 210D poly oxford fabric, and an expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam-panel floor with aluminum frame profiles. The inclusion of eight zippable mesh windows ensures ample ventilation.

The Beyond X rooftop hub tent is available in two sizes. The larger variant, detailed above, retails for approximately €1,899 (US$2,055), while the medium model, suitable for two sleepers, is priced at €1,349 (US$1,460). It’s important to note that the Beyond X requires significant customer assembly, as it ships in four separate boxes. Even the floor panels need to be secured together, a departure from the fully assembled RTTs commonly sold.
