Figure, led by entrepreneur Brett Adcock, emerged from stealth mode just last year, boasting a team comprising industry veterans from notable organizations such as Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Google DeepMind, and Archer Aviation. The company’s mission is straightforward yet ambitious: to develop the world’s first commercially viable general-purpose humanoid robot. In a relatively short period, Figure has made impressive progress towards this goal. By October, the Figure 01 was not only standing on its own but also performing basic autonomous tasks. By the beginning of the year, it had acquired watch-and-learn capabilities, and by mid-January, it was ready to join the workforce at BMW.

The collaboration with OpenAI marks a significant milestone in the robot’s development. Recently, Figure released a video showcasing the Figure 01 bot engaging in real-time conversation, a testament to the robot’s enhanced capabilities. This advancement is largely attributed to the integration of OpenAI’s large vision-language models with Figure’s own neural networks. The Figure 01 bot’s cameras capture visual data at 10 Hz, which, combined with the ability to comprehend spoken words, allows for the translation of complex information into precise, low-level actions.

Brett Adcock shared insights via an X post, highlighting that the demonstration was not teleoperated and was filmed at actual speed, underscoring the authenticity of the robot’s capabilities. The partnership between Figure and OpenAI, although in its early stages, has set an ambitious goal: to train a world model capable of operating humanoid robots on a billion-unit scale.

This collaboration and the development of the Figure 01 bot represent a significant leap forward in the field of humanoid robotics.
