At the 2024 Milan Design Week, the GAC Group unveiled three new city cars, each designed with unique features tailored for urban driving, delivery, and road speeding. These vehicles are part of the GAC Car Culture series 3.0 and represent the company’s latest innovations in compact and efficient city transportation.

Modular electric powertrains for flexibility and efficiency

A standout feature of these new models is their modular electric powertrain. This system consolidates the batteries and driving components into a single, interchangeable unit, which facilitates quick powertrain replacements and reduces maintenance downtime. This modular approach not only enhances the vehicles’ operational efficiency but also aligns with contemporary needs for sustainable and adaptable urban transport solutions.

City Box: A compact delivery solution

The City Box, a compact delivery vehicle with an adaptive trunk, designed for navigating narrow urban spaces efficiently.

The “City Box,” designed specifically for the delivery sector, is a compact car that features an adaptive trunk made from tensile fabric. This trunk can adjust to accommodate various package sizes, making it an ideal vehicle for the intricate and often congested urban landscapes of cities like Milan and Guangzhou. The vehicle, inspired by the Italian Piaggio Ape, is equipped with three wheels, allowing it to navigate narrow passageways and cobblestone pavements with ease. Additionally, the City Box includes a plug and drive system, enabling convenient recharging at home or at public charging stations.

City Pod: Designed for the urban commuter

The “City Pod” caters to urban commuters in Milan and Guangzhou. Inspired by the classic 1950s Isetta, the City Pod is a fast-paced commuter vehicle encased in a panoramic glass shell, which provides a 360-degree view of the surroundings. This design not only enhances visibility but also increases the luminosity inside the cabin, creating a more open and airy environment. The vehicle’s integrated luggage system at the rear offers ample space for personal belongings, despite the compact size of the car.

City Run: A trend-setting urban coupe

The “City Run,” a compact coupe, combines the practicality of a hatchback with the stylish elements of a coupe. This vehicle made its debut at the Milan Design Week, where it showcased its Transparent Display Concept. This feature integrates traditional head-up display data with touchscreen functionality across the dashboard, creating a semi-augmented reality experience. The City Run also introduces GAC’s innovative Air Seats, which use air inflation to provide cushioning, reducing the vehicle’s weight and adding a unique comfort feature.

Innovative features for enhanced user experience

Across all three models, GAC has implemented advanced technologies and design innovations. These include the modular powertrain system, adaptive trunk spaces, panoramic glass shells, and advanced display systems. Such features are not only functional but also enhance the aesthetic appeal and user experience of the vehicles.

With their unique designs and advanced technological integrations, the City Box, City Pod, and City Run are poised to make a significant impact on how city dwellers commute, deliver, and navigate through congested urban environments. As these vehicles move from concept to production, they may offer viable solutions for efficient and sustainable city travel in the near future.
