Solar scooter offers 18-mile daily range extension through sunlight

The Lightfoot scooter introduces a new approach to electric mobility by integrating solar technology to extend its range. Unlike many electric vehicles (EVs) where solar panels contribute minimally, the Lightfoot’s design maximizes solar energy usage. The scooter features sides covered with solar panels that can add up to 18 miles of extra range each day.

Developed by Australian engineer Saul Griffith, the Lightfoot is produced by Otherlab, a San Francisco-based startup that Griffith co-founded. This two-rider vehicle is equipped with two brushless 750-watt hub motors, each located in a 10-inch wheel. These motors are powered by a 48V/1.1-kWh lithium-ion battery. A single wall-outlet charge of this battery provides a range of approximately 37 miles (60 kilometers).

The scooter’s range can be significantly increased through its solar capabilities. The Lightfoot is fitted with two 120-watt solar panels, which can extend the scooter’s range by up to 18 miles (29 kilometers) per day. This enhancement is based on typical usage scenarios where the scooter is often parked in bright sunlight.

According to Otherlab, one hour of “peak sunlight” exposure can generate approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) of additional range. The company also assures users that the solar panels will not become hot enough to cause discomfort to the rider. Additionally, one of the panels can be opened in a gullwing style to reveal a 1.5-cubic-foot (45.2-liter) lockable and weatherproof storage compartment.

Performance-wise, the Lightfoot solar scooter can reach a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h) and is suitable for use on roads and bicycle lanes without requiring a license. Riders can monitor battery life, current speed, and other vital information through a waterproof 2.8-inch LCD touchscreen.

The solar scooter includes several other features aimed at enhancing safety and comfort. These include Lezyne head and tail lights with a combined output of 2,000 lumens at the front, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes for effective stopping power, and house-brand coil-spring front and rear shocks to absorb bumps. A 120-decibel electric horn is also integrated for alerting pedestrians and other vehicles.

The Lightfoot scooter uses two 750W brushless hub motors in its 10-inch wheels for efficient propulsion.

The Lightfoot scooter weighs approximately 137 pounds (62 kilograms) and is designed to accommodate riders with heights ranging from 5 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 2 inches (157.5 to 188 centimeters). This makes it versatile for a wide range of users.

In terms of availability, the Lightfoot solar scooter is priced at US$4,995. Otherlab plans to begin deliveries in January, and interested customers can register for a place in line through the product’s official website.
