These safety stirrups open to help release a rider’s foot during a fall

Traditional stirrup irons are wonderfully simple, but their closed frames introduce a familiar concern: if a rider falls, a boot can potentially remain caught. LeMieux’s Vector range approaches that problem with a spring-loaded outer arm designed to open when sufficient lateral force is applied, giving the foot another route out.

The two adult models share that safety-oriented frame but offer distinctly different riding platforms. The LeMieux Vector Control stirrups use a level, rigid footplate for a planted feel, while the LeMieux Vector Balance stirrups angle the footplate and add a cushioning layer intended to soften impacts.

Both Vector models are machined from aviation-grade aluminum and weigh approximately 419 g (14.8 oz) per stirrup. Their familiar teardrop outline disguises the most important feature: the outer side is an integrated hinged arm rather than a permanently closed branch.

The arm uses a two-stage release arrangement intended to resist accidental opening during ordinary riding. A spring-loaded connection locks it into the base, allowing pressure to be distributed through the frame when the rider loads the stirrup. When enough sideways pressure reaches the arm, it can swing open to help the boot leave the iron.

LeMieux reports a tested breakout force of 36 newtons, equivalent to roughly 3.62 kg (8 lb) of force. That figure describes the force used in the company’s test; it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the arm will open in every accident.

LeMieux explicitly warns that no quick-release stirrup is foolproof. A horse falling, a loose girth allowing the saddle to move, or a slow or unusual exit angle may fail to create the lateral load needed to open the arm. The system is therefore an additional safety feature, not a substitute for suitable boots, correctly sized stirrups, maintained tack and appropriate riding instruction.

Vector Control: a level, secure platform

The Control model’s ergonomic footplate is set at zero degrees. Its rigid, level platform is intended for riders who prefer a stable base without the flex or slope found in some comfort-oriented stirrups.

A cross-track tread pattern combines with embedded hardened-steel pins to give the boot considerable purchase. That can be useful when jumping, riding over uneven ground or working in wet conditions, although the aggressive surface may feel less forgiving than a conventional rubber tread. Mud and arena material can also collect around the pins, so periodic cleaning and inspection make sense.

Despite its name, “Control” refers to the rider’s contact with the footplate; it does not provide control over the horse. The choice is primarily about the underfoot feel: level, firm and grippy.

Vector Balance: angled and cushioned

The Balance version changes the interface beneath the boot. Its footplate is set at five degrees and mounted on a dynamic-polymer cushion layer with a stated 70% compression rating. LeMieux says the layer absorbs impact and vibration when landing over a fence, with the aim of reducing fatigue around the knee and ankle and lowering stress on leg muscles and tendons.

Those are manufacturer claims about the stirrup’s intended function, not evidence that it treats or prevents a medical condition. Rider anatomy, stirrup length, saddle position and discipline can all affect whether an angled or cushioned platform feels more comfortable.

The Balance retains the same cross-track pattern and hardened-steel pins, so the cushioned construction does not mean a soft or slippery top surface. It is likely to appeal most to riders who want some shock absorption while retaining strong boot grip.

Shared geometry helps riders recover a lost stirrup

Underneath both footplates is what LeMieux calls a twin balance arch, designed to distribute weight across the base of the frame. The upper eye is recessed and offset so that the stirrup naturally hangs at approximately 45 degrees to the horse. This outward-facing position can make the opening easier to find with the toe if a rider loses a stirrup.

Published adult dimensions are approximately 19 cm (7.5 in) high and 15 cm (5.9 in) wide overall, with an 11 × 7 cm (4.3 × 2.8 in) footplate. LeMieux also sells junior Vector stirrups separately, so buyers should confirm the model and size rather than assuming every Vector is identical.

The products are described as legal for FEI competition, British Dressage, British Eventing and British Showjumping. Rules can change, however, and riders should check the current rulebook for their discipline, class and governing body before competing.

Which version makes more sense?

The decision is less about safety—the opening-arm mechanism is shared—and more about riding preference. Control is the straightforward choice for someone who wants a flat, rigid platform and direct feedback through the boot. Balance is intended for riders who prefer a slightly angled stance and some cushioning under load.

Neither design can be judged solely from specifications. Footplate angle can change how pressure is felt through the ankle and calf, while the steel pins provide more grip than some riders want. If possible, trying a pair with the boots and saddle normally used is the most reliable way to assess comfort and position.

Owners should regularly clean the tread, check the hinge and spring-loaded arm for free movement, and inspect the frame after a fall or substantial impact. Damaged safety equipment should not remain in service merely because it still appears usable at a glance.

For riders choosing between them, the core question is simple: a solid, zero-degree platform or a five-degree platform with an impact-absorbing layer. Either way, the Vector range combines that preference with a lightweight frame and a side arm designed to give the foot an additional escape route when the right force is applied.
