Volkswagen has unveiled the latest iteration of its iconic Transporter van series at the IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover, Germany. Although the Transporter (also known as the Microbus, Bulli, Kombi, and Type 2) never really left the market, its T6.1 version had started to feel a bit outdated, particularly with the introduction of the separate Multivan series. The all-new 7th-generation Transporter (T7) brings a fresh design, more functionality, and enhanced versatility, making it a standout in Volkswagen’s commercial lineup.
A design shift with new foundations
One of the major changes in the new T7 Transporter is its underlying platform. While the Multivan MPV continues to be built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, the T7 shares its foundations with the Ford Transit/Tourneo Custom. This shift is evident in the van’s softer, more streamlined look, moving away from the traditional boxy design of its predecessors, such as the T6.1, T6, and T5. Though some might miss the familiar shape, the new design is geared towards improved aerodynamics and modern aesthetics. Despite the similarities with Ford’s Transit Custom, Volkswagen has infused the T7 with enough of its brand’s identity to maintain a distinctive look.
Enhanced cargo capacity and utility
Commercial customers will likely be more interested in the T7’s performance and utility than its exterior design, and in this regard, Volkswagen has delivered significant improvements. The T7 boasts over 10% more cargo space than its predecessor. In the standard wheelbase and roof height configuration, the van offers a total capacity of 5.8 cubic meters (205 cubic feet). For those requiring even more room, the long-wheelbase, high-roof variant provides up to 9 cubic meters (318 cubic feet) of cargo space.
In addition to the increased volume, the T7’s payload capacity has also been enhanced, supporting up to 1,330 kg (2,932 pounds). Towing capacity has similarly seen an upgrade, with the van capable of pulling trailers weighing up to 2,800 kg (6,173 pounds), an additional 300 kg (660 pounds) over the T6.1.

Versatility for passengers and commercial use
While the Transporter is primarily known for its utility as a cargo vehicle, Volkswagen has also catered to those needing a people mover. The T7’s passenger version, the Caravelle, is designed to comfortably seat up to eight passengers in addition to the driver. Like the cargo version, the Caravelle can be configured with an extended wheelbase, adding flexibility for commercial shuttle services or large families.

A wide range of powertrain options
Volkswagen is offering the new Transporter series with an impressive variety of powertrain choices. Buyers can select from seven different options, including three all-electric versions based on a 64-kWh battery pack. The electric models are available in power outputs of 134 hp, 215 hp, and 282 hp, providing a range of options for those looking to transition to cleaner energy.
For those not yet ready to go fully electric, Volkswagen also offers a plug-in hybrid version of the Transporter. This 229-hp eHybrid model features an automatic gearbox, blending efficiency with performance.

In addition to the electric and hybrid options, the T7 Transporter lineup includes three turbodiesel (TDI) engines with power outputs of 109 hp, 148 hp, and 168 hp. The 168-hp version comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 148-hp model offers the option to upgrade from a six-speed manual to the automatic gearbox. Both the 148-hp and 168-hp diesel variants can also be equipped with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, providing extra traction and stability in challenging driving conditions.
Completing Volkswagen’s van strategy

The T7 Transporter is part of Volkswagen’s broader van lineup, which includes three distinct models to cater to different customer needs. Alongside the Transporter commercial vans and Caravelle passenger shuttles, Volkswagen offers the Multivan for recreational and business purposes, and the ID. Buzz electric van series for eco-conscious buyers. According to Volkswagen, this multi-model strategy ensures that there is “the right Bulli for every customer.”
While the official California camper van has moved to the Multivan segment, the T7 Transporter remains a popular choice for third-party camper van conversions. Its spacious design and enhanced utility make it a strong contender in the RV market, where it is likely to attract interest from converters seeking to provide both Ford and Volkswagen-based camper options.

Pricing and availability
In terms of pricing, the new Volkswagen Transporter T7 starts at €43,768 (approximately US$48,890) in Germany, including VAT. This price point reflects its enhanced capabilities and versatile powertrain options. Volkswagen has launched a promotional campaign featuring actor Jason Statham to generate buzz around the new model, playing on the double meaning of “Transporter” to highlight the van’s capabilities. It seems surprising that it took Volkswagen this long to capitalize on such an obvious marketing connection.
