Lighter, quieter Moonwalkers offer improved powered walking experience

Carnegie Mellon spinoff, Shift Robotics, has introduced a new version of its powered walking device—the Moonwalkers Aero. Building on the success of its previous strap-on powered wheels, originally launched via Kickstarter in 2022, the Aero model brings key improvements while maintaining core features that made the original design popular. The Aero aims to offer users an efficient, quiet, and lightweight walking enhancement experience.

The Moonwalkers Aero model features a simplified wheel configuration compared to its predecessor. While the original version utilized eight powered wheels and two unpowered ones, the Aero reduces this to four powered and two unpowered wheels. This wheel arrangement matches the business-oriented X variant, which debuted at CES 2024.

A key enhancement in the Aero model is the quieter motor. Shift Robotics claims that the motor is 20 decibels quieter than the original, providing a less intrusive walking experience. However, this quieter motor comes with a trade-off in power, as it produces 350 watts, lower than the previous model, resulting in a torque reduction to 8 Nm (5.9 lb.ft). Despite this, the Moonwalkers Aero remains capable of handling inclines of up to 10 degrees.

In terms of speed and range, the Aero retains the performance levels of its predecessor. It reaches a top speed of 7 mph (11 km/h) and offers a range of 6 to 7 miles (9.6 to 11.2 km) on a single charge. Notably, Shift Robotics has improved the device’s performance in warmer conditions through a new thermal and regenerative management system, which enhances efficiency during extended use.

The Moonwalkers Aero motorized rollers enhance a user’s natural walking pace with an added power boost.

Charging the Moonwalkers Aero is fairly efficient, with a quick charge to 80% capacity in about 30 minutes via USB-C. This partial charge should be enough to power around 5 miles of assisted walking. A full charge, however, takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Designed for ease of use, the Moonwalkers Aero accommodates a range of shoe sizes, from US women’s size 6 to US men’s size 12. The device includes a flexing toe plate to mimic a natural walking motion and offers optional spacers for a more customized fit. Importantly, the new model is also lighter, with each unit weighing 4.2 lb (1.9 kg)—one pound lighter than the original version. This weight reduction makes the Aero more comfortable for users to wear over extended periods.

Like its predecessor, the Moonwalkers Aero doesn’t require users to adopt any special movements. Instead of skating, users simply walk normally, and the device’s improved algorithms adjust the power assistance based on walking speed. Slower paces trigger minimal assistance, while faster walking speeds engage the motor for an effortless boost, helping users reach the top speed of 7 mph.

Each Moonwalkers Aero platform is equipped with four motorized wheels and two unpowered ones.

For those interested in the new model, the Moonwalkers Aero is priced at $1,199, making it $150 more expensive than the original 10-wheel Moonwalkers.
