For those who enjoy spending time off the grid but still rely on modern gadgets, finding a reliable power source can be a challenge. The Shine 2.0 portable wind turbine, developed by Aurea, offers a unique solution. Designed for outdoor enthusiasts and emergency preparedness, this 3-in-1 device combines portability, efficiency, and functionality to charge devices like smartphones, laptops, and cameras in diverse conditions.
The Shine 2.0 is compact and lightweight, folding down to the size of a 1-liter water bottle and weighing approximately 3 lb (1.36 kg). Its weather-sealed construction meets IP54 standards, making it suitable for use in various environments. The turbine features three 23.6-inch (60-cm) composite-reinforced blades and can be mounted on an optional 6-ft-high tower accessory, which includes an integrated level for stability.
When positioned to catch winds of 28 mph (45 km/h), the turbine generates 50 watts of power. This is sufficient to charge a smartphone in just 17 minutes or a laptop in under two hours. However, its performance drops significantly in low-wind conditions; for example, charging a laptop in an 8 mph breeze could take more than 75 hours.
The Shine 2.0 also includes a 12,000-mAh lithium-ion battery, allowing it to function as a portable power bank. It supports 75-watt fast charging through a USB-C port and can power phones, laptops, drones, and cameras. For users needing to charge larger power stations from brands like Jackery or Bluetti, Aurea offers optional adaptors.

To enhance usability, the Shine 2.0 connects to a companion mobile app via Bluetooth. This feature allows users to monitor the turbine’s performance in real time. Highlighting its versatility, Aurea co-founder Rachel Carr said, “Whether you’re exploring off-grid or facing a power outage at home, this turbine provides renewable energy to fast charge your devices when you need them most.”
The Shine 2.0 builds on the success of Aurea’s original portable turbine, which was funded on Kickstarter. The updated version also began as a crowdfunding project, raising $306,961 on Kickstarter in September. Following its initial success, the campaign moved to Indiegogo Indemand, where it has garnered over $475,000 to date.

Currently, the Shine 2.0 is available for pledges starting at $399—a 30% discount from the planned retail price of $571. Shipping is anticipated to begin in May 2025, pending the completion of the already funded campaign. As with all crowdfunded projects, potential buyers are advised to consider the usual risks.
