A French company has unveiled a modular cargo trike designed to bring greater versatility to pedal-powered urban transport. Named Cyclauto, after the company behind it, the trike features a two-part design that mimics the concept of a semi-trailer truck—except it’s entirely human-powered, with no motor or complex drivetrain.
The front “drive unit” contains the saddle, handlebars, single front wheel, headlight, and integrated controls. The steering setup includes both front and rear brake levers as well as a gear-shift knob. Notably, the pedal mechanism is built directly into the front hub, using a three-speed internal gearbox. This eliminates the need for chains, belts, or shafts, offering a simpler and lower-maintenance alternative to conventional cargo bikes.
The rear trailer attaches just under the saddle via a pivot point, stacking vertically above the front drive section. This configuration is said to improve the turning radius and reduce the overall wheelbase, allowing for easier maneuvering and parking in tight city environments.
One of the key advantages of the Cyclauto lies in its modularity. The front drive unit can be paired with different types of rear trailers, depending on the user’s needs. Trailer configurations include enclosed cargo boxes, open-top carriers, rickshaw-style seating, food or coffee carts, and even compact camping trailers. This means businesses or individuals could invest in a single drive unit and multiple rear modules instead of purchasing multiple bikes.

The rear trailer is also collapsible: its aluminum frame features two overlapping tubular sections that slide into each other for easier storage or transport in a van or truck. Additionally, the tool-free disassembly between the two main sections allows users to quickly reconfigure the bike or pack it down for transit.
Cyclauto made its public debut at the recent Spezi specialty bike show in Germany. As of now, further details about its pricing, commercial rollout, and availability remain pending.
