In the realm of electric mobility, the motorcycle segment has witnessed a significant evolution. The unveiling of Evoke’s 6061-GT electric motorcycle marks a pivotal moment for enthusiasts of electric touring. The Beijing-based firm has built a motorcycle centered around what can only be described as an extraordinary feature: the largest battery pack ever to grace a production motorcycle, boasting a 30-kWh capacity and offering a range exceeding 600 km (370 miles) on a single charge.

The Electric Touring Enigma

While electric motorcycles have proven their merit for daily commuting, offering a quick and cost-effective means of transportation, they remain underappreciated as vehicles for long-distance touring. This is especially true in Western countries, where motorcycles are predominantly seen as leisure vehicles rather than practical transportation. The concern for many riders is the ability to undertake long journeys without the constant worry about the next charging station, especially in remote areas where such amenities are scarce.

Evoke’s Answer: The 6061-GT

To address these concerns, Evoke has crafted the 6061-GT with sufficient battery life and charging capabilities to meet the demands of extended travel. In urban conditions, the bike’s range could easily exceed 600 km, although this figure would be halved when traveling on highways. A noteworthy feature of the 6061-GT is its compatibility with level 2 CCS-2 DC fast-charging stations, allowing a swift recharge from 0 to 80% in just 30 minutes, catering to riders with ambitious touring aspirations.

The bike’s heart is a liquid-cooled axial flux electric motor peaking at 90 kW (121 hp) and delivering 206 Nm (152 lb-ft) of torque. Details on its continuous power output remain undisclosed. However, this motor allows the bike to achieve speeds over 230 km/h (140 mph) and a commendable 4.4-second acceleration from 0-98 km/h (0-60 mph).

Design and Aesthetics

The initial response to the design of the outgoing 2023 models of the Evoke 6061-GT was less than favorable, with some harsh criticism directed at its “Twin Plate Exo-frame,” criticized for its lackluster aesthetics. Fortunately, the 2024 models have been redesigned with a more visually appealing structure, concealed under plastic covers that draw attention away from the frame and towards the striking 250-section rear tire.

Features and Specifications

Among its features, the 6061-GT includes a modestly sized dash mounted on the “tank,” ABS, regenerative braking, and sophisticated three-way adjustable suspension. A deep groove seat is incorporated to enhance comfort during extended periods of riding.

Despite its impressive battery and performance specs, the 6061-GT presents some peculiarities. It appears to lack dedicated luggage options, which is a notable oversight for a bike that aims to appeal to tourers. Moreover, the ergonomics of the long tank and flat drag bars may not offer the most comfortable ride over long distances.

Pricing and Availability

Evoke has announced that the 6061-GT is available to order, with deliveries in North America expected to commence in 2024. While the official pricing for the 2024 model is yet to be released, it may hover around the price point of the previous model, which was approximately US$25,000.

The Verdict

The Evoke 6061-GT presents a compelling package for those looking to embrace electric touring. Its mammoth battery capacity sets it apart in the market, potentially easing the range anxiety that deters many from considering an electric motorcycle for long-distance travel. While the bike has some ergonomic and practicality issues to address, the advancements in electric vehicle technology and the focus on design improvement signal a promising direction.

It remains to be seen how the 6061-GT will be received by the motorcycle community at large. Will the significant range and improved aesthetics outweigh the concerns over comfort and practicality for long-distance travel? Only time will tell if the 6061-GT will carve out a niche in the burgeoning electric motorcycle market or if it will remain a novel anomaly for the tour-minded rider.
