Electric bikes have become increasingly popular, but replacing a perfectly good bicycle can be expensive. Traditional conversion kits often require permanent modifications, additional wiring, or complex installation that makes switching back to a standard bicycle impractical.
Skarper takes a different approach.
Developed in collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the Skarper eBike Drive System is designed to transform compatible bicycles into pedal-assist e-bikes in seconds. Rather than replacing the wheel or fitting a bulky motor to the frame, the removable drive unit simply clicks onto a specially designed rear brake disc called the DiskDrive®. When the ride is over, it detaches just as quickly, returning the bike to its original form.
A removable drive instead of a permanent conversion
Unlike most conversion kits that become a permanent part of the bicycle, Skarper is built around a detachable power unit.
The only permanent component fitted to the bike is the proprietary DiskDrive®, which replaces the standard rear brake rotor. Once installed, the Skarper drive unit can be attached whenever electric assistance is needed and removed in seconds when riding without motor assistance is preferred.

This approach allows cyclists to enjoy the benefits of an e-bike while still keeping the handling, weight, and appearance of their regular bicycle whenever the motor is not required.
How the DiskDrive system works
At the heart of the system is Skarper’s patented DiskDrive® technology.
Instead of driving the rear wheel through a chain, hub motor, or crank motor, the removable drive unit transfers power directly through the specially engineered brake disc.
The system combines the electric motor, battery, sensors, and control electronics into one compact module. Once clipped onto the DiskDrive®, it delivers smooth pedal assistance while continuously monitoring rider input to provide natural-feeling power.
Because the drive system is completely self-contained, there are no external cables running along the frame and no separate battery mounted on the bike.
Engineered with Formula One expertise
Skarper developed the system in partnership with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the engineering division behind the Oracle Red Bull Racing Formula One team.
The collaboration focused on creating a lightweight, compact drive system that could deliver strong performance while remaining easy to install and remove.
The result is a product that combines advanced mechanical engineering with intelligent software to create a seamless riding experience.

Performance and specifications
The Skarper eBike Drive System is designed to meet UK and European regulations for electrically assisted bicycles while providing enough power for commuting, recreational rides, and hilly terrain.
Key specifications include:
- 250 W motor
- Up to 76 Nm of peak torque
- 240 Wh integrated battery
- Up to 50 km (31 miles) of assisted riding range
- Approximately 4.5 kg removable drive unit
- Around 80% battery charge in approximately 30 minutes
- Full recharge in around 2.5 hours
The system uses wireless sensing technology and proprietary software to monitor cadence, rider effort, and changing terrain, automatically adjusting assistance to create a smooth, natural ride.
Compatible with a wide range of bicycles
Rather than designing a complete bicycle, Skarper is intended to work with many existing disc-brake bicycles.
Compatibility depends on specific frame and brake configurations, with the company providing a compatibility checker to help owners determine whether their bicycle can use the DiskDrive system.

For riders with multiple compatible bikes, additional DiskDrive rotors can allow the same removable drive unit to be transferred between bicycles instead of purchasing multiple conversion systems.
Companion app and riding experience
The Skarper system also integrates with a companion smartphone app, allowing riders to manage settings and monitor system information.
The intelligent control software is designed to deliver assistance only when required, helping preserve battery life while maintaining a riding experience that feels closer to a conventional bicycle than many traditional conversion kits.
Because the drive unit is removable, riders also gain an added layer of security by taking the powered component with them when leaving the bike unattended.
Pricing and availability
At the time of writing, the Skarper eBike Drive System is available through the company’s official website.
Current pricing starts at £1,495 (approx. US$2,000) for the complete system configured for one compatible bicycle. Additional DiskDrive components are available for riders who wish to use the drive unit across multiple compatible bikes. Availability and compatibility may vary depending on region.
A different way to electrify an existing bike
Skarper approaches e-bike conversion from a completely different angle than conventional hub-motor or mid-drive systems.

Instead of permanently altering a bicycle, it allows riders to add electric assistance only when they want it and remove the entire drive system just as quickly. Combined with its compact design, Formula One-inspired engineering, and patented DiskDrive technology, the system offers an alternative for cyclists who want the flexibility of both a traditional bicycle and an e-bike without owning two separate machines.
