Pulling heavy electrical cable from large drums is a routine part of many installation jobs, but it is rarely the easiest one. Cable drums can weigh hundreds of kilograms, making them difficult to position and cumbersome to unwind. Traditional drum stands often require lifting the reel onto a spindle or axle before work can begin, adding time, equipment, and physical effort to every installation.
German manufacturer LÜBBERING Abrollsysteme has spent decades developing tools to simplify cable handling, and one of its most practical solutions is the ROLLPROFI RAIL. Instead of lifting a cable drum into a conventional stand, the system allows installers to simply roll the drum onto a pair of low-profile rails, where it rotates smoothly as cable is pulled.
A simpler way to unwind cable
The ROLLPROFI RAIL is a portable cable drum roller designed for professional electricians, utility crews, telecommunications installers, and industrial contractors. Rather than relying on a central axle to support the drum, the system uses two independent rails fitted with ball-bearing support rollers.
Once the rails are positioned on the floor, the cable drum is rolled directly up the integrated loading ramps and onto the rollers. As workers pull cable, the drum turns freely with minimal resistance, helping make the unwinding process smoother and less physically demanding.

The design also eliminates the need to lift heavy cable drums onto a spindle, which can save time during setup and reduce the equipment needed on site.
Built for large cable drums
Although the RAIL itself is compact, it is designed to handle substantial loads. The system has a maximum load capacity of 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) and is compatible with cable drums ranging from 500 to 1,400 mm (19.7–55.1 inches) in diameter.
For wooden cable drums, Rollprofi recommends a maximum unwinding weight of 700 kg (1,543 lb) during cable payout.
Each rail measures 903 mm (35.6 inches) long, 160 mm (6.3 inches) wide, and 120 mm (4.7 inches) high, while weighing just 9 kg (19.8 lb). Together, the complete system weighs approximately 18 kg (39.7 lb), making it portable enough to transport between jobsites while still supporting heavy industrial cable reels.
How it works
One of the biggest advantages of the RAIL is its straightforward operation.
To begin, the two rails are placed parallel to one another at the correct spacing for the cable drum. Adjustable swivel rollers allow the system to accommodate different drum diameters.
Instead of lifting the drum, installers simply roll it up the integrated ramps until it rests on the ball-bearing support rollers. Once in position, the drum spins freely as cable is pulled, allowing the cable to unwind with minimal friction.
When the job is complete, one of the support rollers can be locked, allowing the drum to roll safely back down the ramp for removal.

Depending on the size of the drum, loading can be done manually or with the assistance of a forklift or crane.
Ball-bearing support for smoother cable payout
At the heart of the RAIL are its ball-bearing support rollers.
Rather than allowing the drum to drag across the floor or rotate on a fixed spindle, the rollers support the drum directly, reducing rolling resistance as cable is pulled. This smoother movement can make long cable runs easier to manage while helping reduce the effort required from installers.
The bearings are designed to be maintenance-free, allowing the system to withstand regular professional use without routine servicing.
Designed for professional use
The RAIL is built using a combination of aluminum and steel components intended for demanding construction and industrial environments.
Rubber feet help keep the rails stable during operation, while the compact two-piece design makes them easy to transport and store when not in use.
Unlike many disposable jobsite tools, the system is also designed to be serviceable. Rollprofi offers replacement components including support rollers, swivel castors, bearings, axles, rubber feet, and indexing plungers, allowing worn parts to be replaced instead of requiring an entirely new unit.
Applications
The RAIL is intended for a wide variety of industries where large cable drums are handled regularly.

Typical users include:
- Electrical contractors
- Utility installation crews
- Telecommunications installers
- Industrial maintenance teams
- Renewable energy installers
- Infrastructure contractors
- Commercial construction companies
Whether laying underground power cables, installing industrial wiring, or carrying out telecommunications work, the system is designed to simplify one of the most repetitive parts of the installation process.
Part of a broader cable handling range
The RAIL is one of several cable handling systems developed by Rollprofi.
The company’s product range also includes larger cable drum rollers, cable coil unwinders, transport carts, cable routing equipment, and heavy-duty systems designed for even larger drums. According to the company, it has specialized in professional cable handling equipment since introducing its first cable unwinding system in 1978.
Today, Rollprofi’s products are used by more than 12,000 customers across electrical, industrial, and infrastructure sectors.
A mechanical solution to a common problem
Many jobsite innovations rely on electronics or automation, but the ROLLPROFI RAIL takes a different approach. Its solution is entirely mechanical, replacing the need to lift heavy cable drums onto traditional spindle-based stands with a pair of compact rails that allow the drum to roll directly into position.
By combining integrated loading ramps, adjustable supports, and ball-bearing rollers, the system aims to make cable payout faster, smoother, and less physically demanding while remaining compact enough to move easily between jobsites.

For professionals who regularly work with large cable drums, it offers a practical alternative to conventional drum stands—one that focuses on reducing setup time and simplifying everyday cable installation.
