In recent times, the tragic implosion of the Titan submersible has underscored the inherent risks associated with deep-sea expeditions and eco-tourism. While the allure of exploring the ocean’s depths is undeniable, there is a pressing need for safer methods to experience the underwater world. François-Alexandre Bertrand offers an innovative solution with the Platypus Craft prototype, a semi-submersible vessel designed for safe and environmentally responsible underwater exploration.
The Platypus Craft embodies a breakthrough in water adventure activities by seamlessly merging excitement with eco-consciousness. Inspired by the amphibious platypus mammal, this zero-emission vessel challenges the perception that water adventures must come at the cost of environmental health.
Developed in collaboration with Evoy, known for their high-output electric motors, the Platypus Craft is equipped with cutting-edge technology. The five-seater watercraft features a unique capability: its seating platform can be fully lowered to submerge riders safely, providing an unparalleled underwater experience. Safety is a paramount concern, with features such as retractable air hoses connected to an onboard compressor ensuring a secure submersion.
This dual configuration enhances the vessel’s versatility, allowing for both scenic surface rides and immersive underwater explorations. Importantly, this design reduces the potential for environmental harm, making it an attractive option for eco-conscious adventurers.

The Platypus Craft is powered by twin Evoy Outboard Breeze 120+ electric motors paired with a 63KW twin battery pack. Its catamaran hull design enables the vessel to reach a top speed of 25 knots on the surface and maintain a cruising speed of 15 knots. When submerged, the speed adjusts to a comfortable 3 to 5 knots, facilitating unobstructed views of marine life. The craft’s submerged range is impressive, covering distances between 30 to 80 nautical miles, depending on conditions.

The inaugural model, the Platypus Yacht Edition, is set to launch in 2025. This release marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first commercially available submersible featuring Evoy’s electric motor system. This system promises zero emissions, addressing common issues associated with traditional fuel-powered vessels, such as fuel slicks and bilge water pollution.
