Shenzhen-based startup Shanmu has introduced the S1, a compact health-tracking device designed to attach to the inside of a toilet bowl. This innovative gadget aims to provide early detection of diseases and offer health guidance by analyzing urine samples from multiple users in a household.
The S1, roughly the size of an iPhone, utilizes digital microfluidic chipsets and AI-powered analysis developed in-house by Shanmu. A CES 2025 Digital Health Honoree, the device is described as the “world’s first ultra-miniaturized, fully automated home medical robot designed to be placed on the inside wall of the toilet bowl.” It requires only 1 microliter of urine to deliver a comprehensive analysis directly to a connected mobile app within 10 minutes.
Comprehensive health insights from 10 indicators
Equipped with a multi-spectral sensor chip, the Shanmu S1 can measure ten health indicators that span multiple aspects of health. While the device’s official list includes nine of these indicators, they cover a range of critical markers:
- Kidney and liver health: Urine sugar, creatinine, urine protein, and ketone bodies.
- Acid-base balance: pH value.
- Hydration status: Urine specific gravity.
- Inflammation detection: Nitrite, white blood cells, and urine occult blood.
These measurements can offer insights into kidney and liver health, hydration levels, acid-base balance, and potential inflammation, with results and detailed explanations sent to the S1’s companion mobile app.

Built for hygiene and ease of use
The Shanmu S1 is engineered to endure its placement within a toilet bowl. It features an IPX7 waterproof rating and a medical-grade anti-fouling coating to prevent pollutants from affecting the device’s performance. The battery lasts up to two months, and its consumables, which need replacing approximately every six months, are designed for easy replacement.
Family-focused health tracking
A key feature of the Shanmu S1 is its ability to track health markers for an entire family. Users can manage data for multiple individuals via the mobile app, making it particularly useful for families with members who have chronic health conditions or those looking to proactively manage their health.

Availability and pricing
While the S1 has garnered attention for its potential to simplify health tracking at home, Shanmu has yet to announce its pricing or whether the device will require a subscription. More details are expected at CES 2025 in January.
