    Nendo’s river-inspired design for SNCF’s fifth-generation TGV train

Japanese design studio nendo has unveiled its river-inspired concept for SNCF Voyageurs’ fifth-generation TGV train. Developed in collaboration with ALSTOM, this high-speed train continues the legacy of France’s premier rail system, which has been operational since 1981. The latest TGV model reaches speeds of up to 300 km/h and can accommodate up to 1,390 passengers in its highest-density configuration.

Aesthetic inspired by the flow of water

nendo’s design is rooted in minimalism and efficiency, drawing inspiration from the natural movement of rivers. The exterior features a warm gray base adorned with abstract white and gray semi-circles that resemble rippling water. Dark horizontal lines blend technical components like exhaust vents and inspection ports into the overall aesthetic, maintaining a seamless look. The train doors, painted in SNCF’s signature Bordeaux hue, contrast sharply against the exterior, ensuring clear visibility for accessibility.

    Interior elements reflecting fluidity

The river-inspired theme extends into the train’s interiors, with color schemes and materials reinforcing the sense of fluidity. The seating arrangement maintains spatial continuity through horizontal color divisions that visually align seats with the walls. First-class cabins incorporate a warm palette of Bordeaux, dusky brick red, and mustard yellow, while second-class areas shift to navy and blue-gray tones. A gradient effect darkens the seats toward the base, echoing the depth of a flowing river.

The seats themselves are designed to mimic the smooth, polished surfaces of river stones. Featuring shell-like enclosures, they provide adjustable headrests and lumbar support. They are upholstered in Octaspring, a lightweight and breathable 3D-knitted fabric, ensuring both durability and comfort. Adjustable tables accommodate various needs, from compact surfaces for smartphones to larger spaces for working or dining. Foldable footrests and armrests enhance accessibility for passengers using wheelchairs.

A multi-level social space in the café car

A key feature of nendo’s TGV design is its double-decker café carriage, which serves different social functions on each level. The lower deck houses a café-bar offering snacks and beverages, while the upper deck serves as a lounge with flexible seating arrangements. The lower deck mirrors the horizontal color split found in the passenger cabins, with counters and shelving designed to create a floating effect. The upper lounge takes inspiration from a riverbed, featuring various seating styles arranged like scattered pebbles. This mix of intimate and open seating areas allows for both relaxation and social interaction.

    Functional and thoughtful details

Throughout the train, functional elements maintain the theme of organic fluidity. Accessories such as reading lights, coat hooks, and assist grips feature rounded, natural shapes. Lighting plays a crucial role in shaping the ambiance, with different models designed for specific areas—tall fixtures for seating areas, compact versions for the café, and wall-mounted options for corridors. The overhead luggage racks integrate built-in lighting, with anti-fall bars that visually appear to lightly touch, reinforcing the sense of weightlessness.

By incorporating elements inspired by flowing water, nendo has designed a TGV train that balances aesthetics with functionality. This next-generation model enhances passenger experience through thoughtful design, comfort, and efficiency, continuing SNCF’s commitment to high-speed rail travel.
