Hard-shell luggage protects well on the road, but when it’s sitting in a closet or under a bed, it takes up the same amount of space whether it’s packed or empty. Jollying, a luggage brand that won the iF Design Award for this product, set out to address that with the PEBBLE — a polycarbonate hard-shell suitcase that folds down to the thickness of a book when not in use, without sacrificing the structure or function expected of a full-sized travel bag.
The PEBBLE collection spans five sizes, from a 20-inch carry-on to a 30-inch checked trunk, and is available in 10 colors. The folding mechanism is the product’s defining feature, and the collection is designed around making that mechanism reliable enough for regular travel.
A suitcase built around a storage problem
Jollying positions the PEBBLE as a solution to what it describes as the three main shortcomings of most foldable suitcases on the market: insufficient rigidity when upright, easy deformation over time, and a folding process that requires two people or significant effort. The company says the PEBBLE can be folded by one person using one hand, and that the result — a profile roughly as thin as a book — makes it practical to slide under a bed, stand in a closet corner, or carry flat under an arm.
The suitcase opens with a 1:9 opening design — meaning the shell separates with a wide, flat opening rather than a traditional clamshell — and closes with a smooth metal magnetic closure and leather straps. The exterior is polycarbonate with a TSA-approved combination lock and YKK double zippers. The trolley handle is aluminum alloy with three adjustable sections, and the four 360-degree spinner wheels are rated for noise below 45 decibels — a specification the company highlights for travelers navigating hotel corridors late at night.
The collection earned the iF Design Award in 2022, an internationally recognized product design recognition based in Germany.
The size lineup
The PEBBLE comes in five configurations across the collection. The 20″ Lite is a carry-on with 35 liters of capacity, intended for trips of one to three days. The 20″ Pro is a set that pairs the 20-inch main case with a 10-liter companion bag. The 24″ Check-In offers 86 liters for longer trips, the 30″ Check-In steps up to 106 liters, and the 30″ Trunk is the largest at 120 liters.
The 20″ Lite weighs 6.2 lbs (2.8 kg) on its own. All sizes share the same core materials and construction: polycarbonate shell, aluminum alloy handle, polyester interior lining, and nylon and thermoplastic elastomer casters.
Color options across the line are Yellow, Light Blue, Black, Grey, Dark Green, Red, Dark Blue, Purple, Light Green, and Pink — coordinated across the shell and wheel color.
Things to keep in mind
The PEBBLE’s folding mechanism is its primary differentiator, but it also introduces a practical consideration: the suitcase needs to be unfolded and re-latched before packing. This adds a small step that a conventional hard-shell case doesn’t require. For travelers who want to pack quickly without setup, that tradeoff is worth factoring in.
The 1:9 opening design also means the case opens differently than a standard clamshell suitcase. Buyers accustomed to traditional luggage may need a brief adjustment period. Jollying’s website recommends testing the product at home before traveling with it, which is practical advice given the non-standard design.
